Define "sterile"

I am wondering if it is my laziness, wonderful luck, or sheer stupidity that I stopped worring about keeping my terrerium sterile and clean. I kind of want to hear from some more experienced growers here (the platipi I know that do this sort of stuff are all first rate newbies), but it is really that important? The cakes seem to do well on their own once they are fully colonized. Until that point, the army of platipi are anal retitentive about the sterilization, but after that... well, the cakes seem to do just fine on their own. I'm not recomending putting some rotting fruit on top of them or anything, but as far as everything else, are there any significant dangerous of being careless once they are in that stage?

Will mold be able to grow on top of the fungus if there is none of the cake open to air as long as the fungus remains healthy? Or will the mold eat up the cakes as happiliy as us mammals? (Including the noble platupus?)
