{Since growing and fruiting mushrooms on agar is a medium that consists of a nutrient solution firmed up by a substance that is more-or-less non-nutritious like the cottonball you could argue that fruiting mushrooms on agar (which is usually not very practical) could be called "Hydroponic Mushrooms" }

From the hydroponic mushrooms clearing up tek

While agar is great for germinating spores and isolating cultures/strains, it is not suited for the production of fruitbodies. Mushrooms are composed of 90% water. Agar does not have the water reserves necessary for productive fruiting.

Again it must be asked... why? Horse shit is a lot cheaper and would produce better fruits.

agar as a substrate would be awfully expensive

It's already been done a lot of times. But it's just not worth it in any logical way. Maybe for the scientific interest or novelty, but nothing more...

It doesn't work that way. Agar must be kept totally sterile. A tray is far from sterile. Here's a petri dish fruiting. There is probably less than 1/10 gram there. 30 of these petri dishes would give you a three gram dose for ten times the expense of a tray of compost that would give ten times as much. Agar is for cleaning up your mycelium to use as spawn. Rye grain is great as a spawn medium to expand your mycelium, and compost, straw or manure are excellent fruiting substrates. For best results, build on the experience of those who came before you.
