I'm sorry, but i still do not understand the basis for spawning

i keep reading about the best spawn substrates but am lost on what it means to actually spawn...
yes, i've read the glossary - Spawn - The pure Culture of Mycelium on grain, sawdust, etc., used to inoculate the final Substrate
is it just transfering the mycelium grown on cakes or casings to another substrate for a continuous cycle? i've read then the mycelium's strength in growth becomes weaker as you extend it out over several areas - is this in line with the process of spawning?

When you spawn, you will, say, take a half pint of colonized substrate, then break it up and mix up well with a quart of uncolonized substrate, and leave the mix to fullp colonize.

Spawn Example :
You take a fully colonized jar of some kind of grain...any kind.
break it all up into small pieces.
then mix this (spawn) with a bulk substrate such as pasturized horse poo.

alright, i got it now. so it's basically doing the process you would when casing, breaking the cakes down and layering them in the tin, except your goal is not to fruit, just to grow more mycelium in more jars or wherever.
that's basically what i thought it was. is that true though how you shouldn't spread the mycelium out too much from its original source because each time you do, it gets weaker and weaker in strength?

is there really much advantage to innoculating a grain substrate rather than a riceflour/verm mix? will it colonize faster, or are there more nutrients for the mushrooms?

Yes. It will colonize much faster. BRF themselves are good nutrient wise, they just take alot longer to colonize. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

When you spawn to a bulk substrate the goal IS to fruit. It will eventually become one big casing. The reason you do this is
1)A few quarts of colonized grain will produce a lot more shrooms in the end when used to spawn to more substrate
2) Bulk subs like h/poo have much more nutes = much more potent shrooms
3) You cannot (with a high rate of success) germinate spores directly on horse poo (or any straw/dung/compost mix)
I believe the mycelium stays strong until it produces fruits, and after that it isnt as good to spawn with. Yes, you could still do it but your success rate wont be as high. Hope this helps

i'm not able to purchase packaged shit from grow stores anywhere, am i? i wouldn't see why or where people would sell it, plz tell if i'm wrong. i'd like to grow more in bulk and this seems the best to do it with. i have access to horse and cow poo in the summers when i'm back home, but the rest of the year i'm 'shit' out of luck.

Id be surprised if there wasnt a single horse stable somewhere near you. A FOAF drove 45 min one way to pick up his poo, most people are more than willing to give it away

in theory then, from the past i've grown out cakes (brf/verm), could i crumble one fully colonized cake between 5 other sterilized (brf/verm) jars, close the caps and let the mycelium grow over and just keep repeating the cycle? or is grain and bird seeds really only ideal for this?

Was @ the horsestables here today, but very much straw between the poo. And I want a straight poo grow this time.
But godspeed it is true if you extend that half pint of mycelium too much it can give mutations in your fruits.
Bye, MF

well, at my home in summer, i can easily do that method...but during the later months and winter i'm in an apartment, in a univerisity town. yes, i could go somewhere to get it, no doubt, there are farms everywhere, but wouldn't my apartment smell horrid adding water and mixing and baking horse shit? i never read anything about the smell though, is it not that bad really? also i don't know if i want to be carrying in bags of horse shit up flights of stairs past my neighbors, hah, but seriously, i dont care really i guess... i just don't want my apartment smelling like shit

Good aged poo doesn't really smell at all. I have a 35 gallon tub of it at the foot of my bed. It's my new hope chest, lol. It can smeel a little when pasteurizing, but not much. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

how many jars would you say i could spread one out to without loosing mycelium strength?

would i be able to work with this method?

When people want to increase the amount of spawn sometiems they grain to grain transfer. One pint of colonized spawn, spawn that to 8 other uncolonized pints. One week later you have 8 pints.
If you do this more then 3 times mutations can come.
So, for ordinary spawning, yo udont need to worry bout that. You worry about contams then. You want a fast colonisation of your substrate!
I like a spawnratio of 1 part spawn 4 tot 6 parts of substrate. The less the faster spawnrun.
The second question is like the "grain 2 grain" method i mentioned above. Doesnt work well with cakes.
Good luck!
