No one is paid unless the payer can benefit from it. I guess a lot of people (including me, at times) are too short-sighted to realise the survival of our planet is beneficial to them.

Yep, I'd give it another 200-300 years before total ecological collapse. Fun times for sure!

The earth is doomed no matter what anybody does. That is the nature of mortality. Even the universe follows it.

I think right now we are on the peak of ecological destruction, this will only get better from now. Our own greed will make us save earth as we try to find new cheaper and more avilable sources of energy.
Things seem very bright for us in the future to me.

I agree. Businesses will soon have no choice but to realize that sustainable development is in their own financial interests.

There is many things that could happen in the future that could end humanity. I hurd that The earth is slowly losing its outer magnetic field and soon we will be exposed to massive quantities of cosmic radiation from the sun.

We are doomed to go out on Nitrous..........woooooooooo hoooooooooo!

I thought to look it up and see if Nitrous was a possible solar gas. Not much is known, some may come in from sun spots and solar flares but it is on the rise as a green house gas.

There may be some ironic truth in his typo. What a hoot!!!!

Good point. I'd like to hope you're right. I do tend to be a bit pessimistic about certain things sometimes, I do admit....

you doomgloomers seem to have really small minds, as if such a limited set of possibilities exist before us. I live in Tokyo, and with the implementation of various ingenuitive civic policies, the government in conjunction with local corporations have been able to decrease the amount of pollution (air, waste etc) in and around the city.

recently, plants have begun to grow everywhere and there even a few buildings have become completely covered in greenery.

(((comic radiation)))

Exactly. Some people like to kid themselves and pretend humans aren't a part of the big picture... they like to fancy us as some outside force... because we're "special" and we're "not like the other animals"... what a load of crap. Egomaniacal crap.

We can jump to place the blame on other people... but the truth of the matter is, we live in (and are a part of) a chaotic system. That system dictates our fate, even through the actions of our own populace.

Of course, this is not to say we can't delay the inevitable. But the important thing to recognize is that this need to delay the inevitable stems from our own irrational fears of [the unknown/death].

Until one accepts his own personal demise in heart and mind, how can he or we possibly accept the demise of the entirety of humanity?

Without acceptance, we live in a state of denial. And if you look around at the U.S. and several other countries these days, the word denial describes the general consensus on this issue pretty damn well.

Pretty much everyone knows, on some level, that we're on a downward spiral of massive proportions... but almost nobody is trying to change it. We do not acknowledge and accept the truth, because the task at hand seems too big a challenge for us to undertake alone.

Hmmm... sounds just like the spiritual struggle of an individual caught up in his own ego when it's put that way, doesn't it?

Surely we can all relate to these concepts on a personal level. We've all done it... most of us are still doing it on a day to day basis. It is our personal tendency to cling to denial... and that dictates the population's tendency to cling to denial.

--

It must be accepted that the other half of the coin we exist upon is nonexistance. We can't go around acting like mortality isn't a fact of life.

Our having done damage to this planet through humanity's lifecycle is chaos, working through us, to complete the cycle that is dictated by the very nature of a chaotic system.

--

*hands you 2 cents*
