Q on casing
    #4174201 - 05/14/05 12:52 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys, I've been reading about casing lately, and after reading a few pages, I think to myself "why try and fruit single cakes when you can simply case your cakes and get higher yields?"  I think that it is more worth your time to do a casing rather than single cakes, but then again, I am still a newb.

In the teks I've been reading, it explains that you can even do a casing in a 12 inch deep container, and use that same container as the fruiting chamber.  This interests me greatly.  Let me see if I will be doing this correctly.

I fully sterelize a 12 inch deep container, and then lay down an inch of dry vermiculite on the bottom of the container.

Then I take the fully colonized jars, empty them into a plastic sandwich bag, and break up the pieces.

I then distribute the broken up pieces of cake from the sandwich bags evenly over the surface of the dry vermiculite.

It all seemed very simple to me until this next step, which is putting a layer of "casing mix", over what I have laid down already.  What exactly is a suitable "casing mix", and how do I make one?  I've been reading for a while now and couldn't get a straight answer.

If any of you guys could give me a suggestion on how to make a sterelized casing mix to place on top of the first two layers previously mentioned, I would greatly appreciate it.

P.S.  Sorry for such a long post, but I thought that if i explained it more thoroughly, it would make it easier for you guys to give me an exact answer.  Later! :mushroom2:

The fire and spoke loud with pride
