No Pinning

My monkeys uncle has had 4 100% colonized cakes in a perlite humidified terrarium for about a week and a half now, the cakes are fanned 3 times a day and there is plenty of humiditiy (he can see condensation on the glass) the temperature inside is around 74 degrees but he has not seen any signs of pinning, oh yeah he also dunked 2 of the cakes before putting them in the terarrium thinking they may be dry. Should he give them some more time or should he try cold shocking them?

Well, I also know a monkey who recently had some cakes in a terrarium for over two weeks with no pinning! In a desperate attempt, straws were put into the cakes and filled with water two or three days ago. Addtional lights were put around the terrarium with some dark cloth. This was done very infrequenty, but the temperature was probably raised a few degrees for at least a few hours over the past few days. Today, for the first time, pins are showing! I don't know if any of the extras measured helped the pins start growing, but the basic idea of this message is that there's nothing to worry about. I think the monkey knows if the measured helps, but he doesn't speak english.

yeah, hang in there, if the humidity's right the mycellium should look snow white and fluffy like cotton. it can take 2+ weeks to fruit sometimes

Time and patience. Monkies are wise, even IF their farts smell like burnt bananas.

A good tip is to wait for pinning to occur before you birth the cakes. But if the humidity is high, and you see new mycelium forming on the cakes then you are fine and you just need to wait.

well maybe it is that my humiditity isnt right....the cakes like I said have been in this monkeys terrarium for about a week and a half...they are all white but not fluffy like the pictures of the cakes I've seen on this website....could it be the humidity is too high or to low? The walls of the terrarium and always have condensation on them so I was thinking the humiditity was ok....

Well, the moisture level inside the terrium might be okay, but that doesn't mean that the cakes aren't kinda dried out. They tend to do that and if they aren't growing anything, mushroom or more of the fluffy white, that would tend to be an indication. If no results develop a good thing might be to either put the cakes directly on the bottum on the terrium (ontop of the perilite) to soak up some of the moister that is on the bottum. Or a small cup big enough to hold a cake can be used. The cake can be put into the small container and it can act as a small water reservior(sp?). Then adding some water, not much, and letting the cake sit for a day would rehydrate the cake, if it is infact dried out.

well thats what he thought when he first took the cakes out of the jar he thought they may be a bit dry...he actually dunked 2 of the cakes for 24 hours and set all 4 of them on the layer of perlite...it just doesnt seem like my mycellium is getting fluffy at all....he's at a loss here...this is his first attempt so he knows to be patient but things just dont seem like they are going anywhere....I'm afraid if they take too long that they will become pray to contams

Well my monkeys stupid uncle was becoming frustrated with his cakes not pinning so while he was fanning the terrarium out he decided to check the perlite which turned out to be dry as a bone. So the monkey dunked the cakes in h202 overnight in the fridge. Removed all perlite and started over again. Was dunking the cakes in the fridge overnight the right thing to do or does he have a disaster in the works? He also noticed some cobweb mold forming on one of the cakes. That cake was dunked seperatley.
