Afraid of happiness
    #4173164 - 05/14/05 01:32 AM (13 years, 16 days ago)

Finally after hard work and discipline I am over coming my depression and anxiety. Im starting to get happy more on a daily basis but my only problem is excepting this happiness. Im afraid that being happy too much will cause my mind to be immune to it. Im afraid that soon my body will be used to being happy and no longer will I be in a happy mood. What should I do? Is this true? wtf?

No worries matey. Happiness grows! I will warn you about energy though. When we are depressed we shut down. That means all our life energy goes into holding the depression. When it begins to lift that energy becomes available. Well that can be very uncomfortable. That energy may want to take you deep into the reason you became depressed in the first place, to resolve it. If you aren't prepared you may want to shut down that energy again. You need to be willing to go where it takes you. If you can manage that it will expand into more joy and happiness. On and on.

being happy does not take away your ability to be happy, it increases it, because it's easier to be happy, it's like a muscle

Habituation doesn't happen to happiness.

Things like Zen, if this is close to your line of thought, are often misunderstood as constant happiness. More, in my experience, like constant understanding that there's no reason to be unhappy. If this aspect of constancy is not maintained then your happiness can quickly become something you rest on and use almost as a crutch, and it will turn to depression again. But no problem, because as you feel it slipping away you remind yourself to reaffirm yourself and retake a proactive role in the creation of your happiness. If happiness were self-sustaining, well that would be bad and indeed impossible. It faulters sometimes to point out to you vital information which, if you accept in a light of learning, then you can become happy again.
