Another Casing Q
    #4173011 - 05/14/05 12:43 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

** Just wanted to know...When I mix the ingredients (Peat/Verm) Should I measure them Dry and them mix and then Wet until water content is correct?...Or wet them and sterilyze (in microwave) and then rehydrate?.....Tnkx in adv.    **

I crushed up and sterilyzed Egg-shells...I've posted about this a lot :smirk:

So, Egg-shells are Calcium Carbonate and it's a short term buffer..So it'd be good for something like peat...Right?

Whereas something like ___ (long term) would be good for something neural like verm./coir...

Long term buffers (from Agar's posts) are more "ideal" b/c towards the end of cropping/harvesting, the sub. (or was it casing?) becomes Acidic...

So...lol...Should I use both when using peat?...I have peat and verm. and i'm not sure how much peat I should add to verm...And I'd like to mix it up, sterilyze it and use it later (Say about 2 months tops)...Would that be ok or would the Ph change...?

Might sound like a Dumb Q , but I have nothing to test the Ph so i'm looking for the best estimate...And yea, I kno peat varies in Ph from bag to bag...But like I said, just looking for an estimate

Tnankx again everyone, w/o the shroomery, i'd be pretty Lost

Crushed eggshells is more or less LONG term buffer (and not short)
Garden chalch (??) the fine calcium powder is more for short term instant PH buffer.

I use peat and only the short term calcium. 5 to 7 flushes on straw anyway.
Am gonna use both (long and short) if i bother enough. But I am happy with current results.

Yea I read that when you powderize the shells it's more of a short-term buffer...and when you don't and just crush them, it's more of a Long term buffer...I'm just not sure on how much crushed egg-shell to use for the peat/verm. casing....

I heard the one teaspoon per quart is enough...But i'm not sure how much peat and verm. to mix lol.

I use about 5% garden lime for my peat/verm mix. Which is 70-80% peat and rest verm.

So 70%peat and about 30%verm....and 5% lime...

I'll probably do something like..

-1 quart peat
-1 pint verm.
-1 teaspoon powderized eggshells (calcium carbonate)

That sound about right?
