Triskaidekaphobia! AAACK!
    #4171644 - 05/13/05 06:04 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Friday the 13th!

I'll be staying away from black cats, careful not to walk under ladders, and very, very gentle with mirrors tonight.

For your own safety, I suggest you do the same!

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

On Friday, July 13th, 1209, Pope Gregory I dispatched his Crusaders to kill every man, woman and child in a location in Southern France where less than 200 heretical Cathars were living. The Crusaders asked the 'holy' father how they would know the heretics and the pope replied: "Kill them all, God will know His own" (which is where the 'Kill 'em all, God will sort 'em out' bumpersticker comes from). 15-20 thousand people were massacred that day, and ever since, Friday the 13th has kept its bad karma.

I flew to Atlanta on Friday the 13th. I sat next to a guy who was born on Friday, October 13th. The runway sign read "13-13" and the hotal on Druid Hills Road was at Junction 13. It's not that I'm superstitious (I try to eliminate that at every turn) but numerology, as Pythagoras and the Kabbalists after him will affirm, has a lot to say about the structure and function of the universe.

I went to Atlanta to go to my Lady's daughter's graduation from Agnes Scott College. Five years ago, on Friday the 13th, she was staying with us. I awoke that morning to see a truly bizarre sight - one that had never happened before, nor occurred since. Hundreds and hundreds of nightcrawlers came out of the lawn from three sides of the pool, and dropped into the water. I ran out and hosed them back to the grass, but out came the second wave. I left for work and when I returned there must have been 20 pounds of dead waterlogged worms at the bottom. Let me tell you, a pile of rotting worms smells worse and attracts more flies than any dead animal that I've ever smelled or seen! Friday the 13th.

Ah, but one Friday the 13th approximately 4 years ago, I received a check in the amount of $13,000.  To celebrate, I went to the store and bought a bottle of champagne and a gallon of ice cream, which came to exactly $13.00.

The synchronicity of existence signifies more than we are led to believe.

The significance is that our brains are pattern recognition "engines" and will "see" things that are not even there. Placing meaning where there is none has no cosmic value.

The difference between 13,000 and 13 is 12,967. WOW! How very meaningful. I found a Lincoln penny and just then a Lincoln Continental drove by. Stop the presses: beep-abeep-be-beep - message from the ether. Will just WHAT is the message? Oh, that's right first you fabrciate significance then you fabricate some weird story to back it up.

Lest you think this is mere skepticism, I had hundreds of letters from people ALL ovber the world who had bought my backgammon program. They ALL saw SOMETHING weird with the random number generator. I spent months making and checking the random number generator. It passed all tests. Even had a mathematician double check it.

"Your program cheats!" (It doesn't)

"It always rolls the perfect number for the computer." (Nope)

"It rolls 55 way too often. (distribution checked out)

And so on. EVERY SINGLE PERSON was sure they were right. EVEN AFTER I had a few over to my house and set it up and tested it step-by-step with them. Facts can never override someone's "feeling".

The proof is in the pudding.

Sometimes a coincidence is JUST a coincidence (my Jungian parallel to Freud's "Sometimes a cigar is JUST a cigar").

Synchronicities have long been my 'manna from Heaven.' They differ phenomenologically  from simple probability in the subjective, self-conscious pole of the experience. There can, as you say, be false meaning, as in the case of acute paranoia or schizophrenia, paranoid type,  even in the eccentricities of schizotypal personality disorder (or in just being wrong). BUT, there is also true/real meaning, which though it may be only a piece of an individual's 'personal puzzle' of Life, it completes a meaningful picture as the metaphor suggests. It might turn out that synchronicity is the 'mechanic' through which Psi phenomenon and even prayer operate, not mere probability of Hobbesian particles in motion plus pure randomness. Those things undoubtedly operate as well on another 'level' so-to-speak.

What can I say? Human beings 'constellate' consciousness, replete with self-awareness, intentionality and perception of meaning. Magnets 'constellate' magnetic fields. Celestial bodies 'constellate' gravity. And what's more...I think your attitude is pissing off your Guardian Angel (and I don't mean Curtis Sliwa's)

I don't think there was anything magical about my Friday the 13th. I didn't go purchase a lottery ticket based on those "13"s. It was just cool. I know it was all random and doesn't mean a thing. Was just fun, ya know?

The runway sign read "13-13"

You are embellishing, subconsciously I imagine, but that you remember 13-13 instead of what you actually saw is telling and makes me wonder about the other 13's you your account.

I am a licensed pilot.

Runways are numbered with the first two numbers of their magnetic heading. You can have a runway 13-31 meaning the runway has a magnetic heading of 130 in one direction and 310 in the other, but there is no such thing as a runway 13-13. You subconsciously transposed the numbers to fit your world view.

I am unaware of any other airport marking, including taxiways, that could be so numbered.
