Trouble on Second Flush
    #4169238 - 05/13/05 02:52 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

My conditions provide perfect first flushes and then my second flushes are almost non existant. I read about a year ago about disturbing pinsets , can this be the problem?? Or is it that I am losing moisture in the cakes. I always patch and then mist heavely after a flush. I dont saturate though! I thought it might be my temp but then I flushed a new case and still no 2nd flush on an old case at the same time. Can someone help???

Need more details like substrate, casing, thickness of both, conditions, dunk...and pictures would really help. I've found lightly rubing a fork across the top helps some times (not even scratching, just disturbing things. But not always...and I'd need to see a picture before I could tell you if that would help. Does it shrink from the sides? Do you fill them in? How much do you patch? Light layer over it?

Okay Scat here it is. Im am unsure at exactly what temp is inside PMP but my house is usually about 70 Degrees. My RH is maintained via perlite and is always good. In my cases I usually use 60/40 verm with no calcium carbonate. and I do 1 inch bottom 1-1.5 inch grain layer, then 1 inch 60/40 top layer. I don't dunk(because I read that you don't need to. My lights are aquarium flourescents that are on 12/12 schedule. and pictures are as follows: I mist usually everyday. They are pulling away from case but only after first flush. I dont use foil around the base. (well haven't lately due to laziness. So tell me what you think. Thanks Scat you have always been there for me brotha.

I forgot to add that my PMP has an inline filter and two bubble wands under the perlite. I hope this helps.

Harvesting incorrectly is probably the biggest cause of wiping out the subsequent flush.  There is PH and casing moisture to consider also, but nothing will do you in as good as harvesting taking huge craters out of the casing layer.  Try to twist gently and pull away while doing minimum damage, then patch holes with casing layer, mist heavily, and hope for the best.  I hope that helps, I've definitely wrecked my fair share of pinsets in the past myself.  It's not easy, harvest time is damaging regardless.

When harvesting I notice the mush try to pull away a lot of the roots I try to yank them off and stuff them back in and then patch. Is this bad? Should I just chuck the root part and patch??

Does everything else sound in order?? Are the cases supposed to pull away like that??

Don't yank, you should twist gently then pull. Like I said, you want to disturb the casing as little as possible. Casings pull away, that is normal.

I'm no expert but could it be to much humidity. The perlite alone will maintain 95-100% humidity. Plus bubble wands and daily mistings. Seems excessive. Cakes require a higher humidity then casings. don't casings do best at 85-93% humidity and cakes at 95-100%?

If it was a humidity problem then why are my cases flushing REALLY good on the first one, then dwindleing down on my second flush while the mushies that do grow are still nice and strong?

Look at this post under Scaling.

Scaling
