Low Potency Problems?
    #4168851 - 05/12/05 11:10 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Ok well this last strain a grew (EQ), they weren't that potent. I had to take twice the amount to get an ok trip. Ive taken spore prints of them and I was wondering if I decided to grow them again would the potency level be the same as the ones before? Or does potency really rely on the conditions and the way you grow them?

im guessing you are doing brf cakes?

try switching to rye or spawn them with some shit, you'll be surprised.

About 90% of the time someone complains of potency they didn't dry the mushrooms right. You should have reduced your weight by about 92% if you dried them right. If they aren't dried perfectly, they can easily seem really weak. Did you dry them right? How do you know? Did you take their weight before and after to make sure they weight less than 1/10th their original weight?

I've been told that the substrate is the thing which affects potency the most. However, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that there actually might be significant (though rare) variations in potency from one strain of cubensis to another--particularly since no one can point to a comprehensive scientific study to prove or disprove this.

Yes they were dried correctly-

Used in a desiccant chamber until cracker hard dry. Yes I used brf cakes. It was my first grow. So if I switched to rye I would get alot more potent mushrooms?

from all reports substrate can make large differences in potency. i have no direct quantitative experience, though.

a great experiment would be to grow out that same strain using a different substrate (horse manure, being the best from what I understand) and actually see what the difference is!

most likely it was your substrate if it was brf especialy older brf can kill potency not enough nutrients to create psilocybin and psilocin in larger amounts try rye or even better horse poo

If you want to use BRF, that is fine. Buy WHOLE brown rice and grind it up with a blender or coffee grinder. If you buy the flour, you won't get nearly the results. Back then I used half pints, though, I had the best luck with wild bird seed and a little vermiculite.

Yeah I also noticed that some of the mushrooms couldn't even oxidize even when I tried to squeeze them. Some oxidized pretty easy but most didn't. Oxidation is a sign of some pretty potent shrooms as from what I here.

nope it was between me and 3 of my friends. We had to take 5.5 each to get like a level 2 trip.

rye has a higher tryptophan(tryptamine?) content than most seeds so you get more alkaloids. More potent shroom.

print them as they will be new genetics through the spores and you wont have a real problem with potentcy due to spores. may have just been low potentcy genetics but the spore wont necissarily carry that trait over considering trillions of spores will be realeased and 1/5 germinating. chances are you'll get a completley different genetics

drying doesnt matter, eq's are the weakest cubes out there. They are nice becasue they are so easy to grow and grow big with nice prints but they are inconsistant with potentcy. Try gt for some kick ass shrooms, b+ are also really nice.
I have only heard the term bunk shrooms when dealing with eq's. they suck

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I have heard many happy EQ eaters...including myself. Mine were grown on h-poo though. I suggest upgrading your substrate. 1.5 grams was a decent level 2+ trip.

I grew around 10oz of EQs on PF cakes on my first grow, and they were very potent.
