Help me decide if I should flee the country.

I live in the USA and I feel that working 40 (and usually more with overtime) hours a week is a waste of my life. I have heard rumors that in most other countries the standard of working is 30ish hours a week which would be ideal for me. Is this true? I have attached a poll.

By living in the USA and working 40 or more hours a week, i feel that i have no time to discover new things that i may be interested in, spend time on current hobbies, develop new hobbies, spend time in nature, just plain waste time on the internet.
I have already worked 40 hours this week and its only thursday. i have atleast 7 more hours of work sitting on my desk right now (at work, i am home right now) that i must finish tomorrow. My "team leader" also showed me some stuff that he was working on (that i will be responsible for converting from a paper, to a computer) that will be about 4 more hours of work that i must do tomorrow morning before starting on the 7 hours of work on my desk. I am going to be working more than 50 hours this week... wtf?
what is the point of living if i am stuck in an office all day?
I work to live.... I dont live to work!

My job doesn't make nearly enough to support my recreational life style.
Which is why I sell weed. Maybe you should start dealing too

I have considered such things, but I have such a problem with paranoia that living a lifestyle that might result in having my "freedom" taken away (going to jail) for more than 3 months would have such a strong mental grip on me that I may as well really be in prison.
In other words... the risks outweigh the rewards for me.

i have some advise for you. i have managed to live witout working for anyone else for over a year now. and although its hard i still manage to do it.
i will note that i do live for free, under the graces of my father, although where i live i not too accomodating i am greatful for it.
for the last year or more i have been totally self employed rarely working, and always being paid in cash. i.e. no taxes. i have driven from chicago to mexico, florida, canada, california and further.
working for myself has allowed me to do pretty much what i want when i want to. although my style of living is not anything close to glamorous, but i do enjoy myself.
you might want to konw what i do. for a while last year i ran a small landscaping company, then in the winter i bought a rickety old jeep and plowed snow ( barely got out 3 times in the whole year because of a lack of snowfall in the region but still made money) after that i decided that i wanted to learn to blow glass.
i make pipes and beads now and am gettting damn good at my work. this is goingn to allow me to take a 1 month road trip, taking my glassblowing supploes along with me i can work anywere, and camping and staying with friends, i will be going from chicago to detroit, to newmexico, to arizona to tenesee, back to southern illinoins then to chicago again. and a few jam band shows in the middle to sell my wares.
ill be camping and staying with friends. and having a damn good time of it.
anyone can do this, its just a matter of finding something that you can do for yourself. im sure that you have a "marketable" skill or talent that would allow you to work less and have more time for the pleasures of life.
i will admit that i am about 3 grand in debt, but for a year that isnt bad, andl alot of that was invested in my glass blowing eqiup (a grand) and my snow plow (1500) which can be sold and are making money.
find your passion and follow it.
im sure that you have some talent

You could get a good paying job as a german customer service agent in a Dutch Call Center. German agents are very hard to get.

I'm American but I live in Japan teaching English. I work from 8:30 to 3:30 five days a week. I get an hour off for lunch and I often have time to read novels when I am at work. I make about $30,000 a year.
If you go somewhere else to live, where would it be and what do you would you do?

I've been thinking the same thing, I just want the garuntee, that its different elsewhere. My boyfriend is planning on fleeing to spain or south france, because apparently they have a shorter work week, more vacation and better retirement benefits..... if this is true I'm all for european lifestyle, yeah, I'd say flee.

most european countries won't let you move there and just start working. some will allow you to if you get a work-situation filled out before, but i know Denmark for example will not allow that. they will only allow you to move here and work if you are filling some special position that they need to draw help from the outside for. so goes the social-welfare state.
of course, there is always black-market work...
