They aren't rare this time of year. Those are yellow morels, one of the best edible mushrooms around. The first one looks a bit deformed in the photo so I can't be certain it's the same as the others, but that's what all of the rest are.

Be sure to cook them thoroughly before eating, and bon apetit!

Congratulations!

Happy mushrooming!

ya the stems seem to be way under ground.. the tops are nice and fat but its hard to see how deep they go. thanks for the info guys. toxicman you said to cook them thoroughly before eating. can you comment on that a little more? like why perhaps and how. that would be great thanks guys.

When eaten raw, morels often cause serious digestive upsets (meaning you puke your guts out). As long as they are thoroughly cooked the problem goes away. Some people have problems with drinking alcohol and eating morels, so you might want to not drink too much with them.

The stems of morels end at (or just barely below) ground level. If you cut them off with a knife you'll leave the dirt and stuff behind that you don't need anyway.

As far as recipes, do a google search on morel recipes and you'll have more recipes than you'll ever have morels. They do quite well with the basic sauteing in butter. Generally morels do well with what would be overcooking with most mushrooms. They also make an excellent cream of mushroom soup.

Happy mushrooming!

Its an awsome edible mushroom. Sauteeing it up and serving it on top of steak is a good way to eat.
