I have recently begun listening to Steve Vai. He is amazing with a guitar and has a style all his own (I think it would be good tripping music too). He has played with a lot of big name rockers but I just began hearing about him so I though I'd try and introduce more people to his music.
if you're into some heavier music check out:
1. Giant Ball of Gold
2. Bad Horsie
3. Die to live
or a bit softer:
1. For the Love of God
2. YA-YO GAK (only because it's his kid "singing")
3. Brandos Costumes (Gentle Ways)
and some different stuff:
1. The Blood & Tears
2. Fire Garden Suite: Bull Whip, Pusa Road, Angel Food, Taurus Bulba
3. Beethoven 5th symphony (I love his version of this song)
Really I like most all of his music but I figured I'd point you in the direction of some of my favs.

Brain May
Van Halen
White Snake
Yngwie Malmsteen
Joe Satriani
he's also got music in "Bill and Ted's excellent adventure" and he has a duel with the karate kid in the movie "Crossroads"

VAI.COM UPDATE: Thanks to the many fans who wrote in helping clear up this confusion. We have heard that "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" is actually performed by Chris Impellitteri, and that "Beethoven's 5th" is performed by Nuno Bettenbourt (we've been unable to confirm this).
I love Vai. I saw him in concert last month, and it was amazing. He's a great musician and has some other extraordinary guys in his band. Great player and writer.

yeah I only picked Ya-YO-GAK because I thought it was cool that he had don't a song with his kid (not because the song is great)
I'm sorry to hear that Beethoven's 5th wasn't him. But on the Vai CD I have deff. mentions him playing with Yngwie. Oh and you can download Formula 1
Also has anyone listened to him while tripping? He sounds like he might be good trip music.

I downloaded "For the love of God" because I've heard SOOOO much ABOUT Steve Vai, but never actually heard him.
Doesn't seem bad... not really my style in the sense that it's just one big guitar solo, but it is definitely well done.

FTLOG is AMAZING. I love it. For the song, he fasted for four days and practiced constantly. When he recorded, he had played it so much to perfect it that his fingers bled.
I read once in an interview with him that he hates to improvise, so most of what you hear (including all of FTLOG) is charted out beforehand.

I might catch some shit for this, but I think most of those guitar virtuoso guys get pretty boring after a while. A guy shredding fast enough to start a small fire only appeals to me for so long. Take Malmsteen for example. Great musician, but damn, he just doesn't keep my attention. There are of course exceptions though, as some of his stuff I really like, and some of it I just don't. Same with Vai(although keep in mind I'm not comparing the two at all, definitely two different styles).

Most all of Vai's stuff is all instrumental which is why I threw in "Blood & Tears" but on the other side of it he plays a lot of different stuff if you don't like one of his songs I still say check out a few others.
Personally I like songs without lyrics. In fact I really started listening to Vai while trying to find songs for a CD I was making without lyrics. A friend suggested "For the Love of God" after I told him I had "Bad Horsie" on the CD then about a month later I was in a music store and picked up a Pink Floyd CD and a Vai CD.
