Casing with only vermiculite?
    #4166138 - 05/12/05 11:33 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Would this still work? The reason peatmoss is added is to add more moisture right?
thanks

Casing with just verm works fine, that's what I've always done.

Yes it will work fine, but not as optimal as other casing materials.

peat for pH balance?????? Not so When using peat you must adjust the pH up. It is too acidic for use without a buffer such as lime, eggshells, crushed oyster shells etc.

>No, peat is not added for moisture, but for pH balance and to help with pinning.

No, peat moss is not added for moisture (verm is) or pH balance (lime and oyster shells are), it is added for texture. Peat (or coir) provide a nice climate for pins to form. Verm works straight but peat/verm+buffer is the only way to get consistant solid results of pinsets. Coir can work out well too, and doesent REQUIRE a buffer (I've found a long term one to be benificial though).

Hey scatman, that is one of the best, EVER pics of a flush I have ever seen. What is going on there?? Did you just lay a sheet of foil down in a big Rubbermaid?? How deep was it? What kind of FC were you using?

12 quart tubs:

Filled with about 4-5 quarts hpoo/worm castings/coir/verm/straw (seen in the bags there) and spawned with 1.5 quarts rye berries/wbs/rye grass seed. Cased with peat/verm and fruited in my closet, check my link in my signature for details on my closets

There are a few casings in those 4 pictures, not just one. Some of the casings have one of the 12 quart tubs, then a peice of tin foil, then another tub...and I put everything in there. The tubs will let a little light through and the nested tubs solves this. Also just putting a tub, then foil, then the substrate in the foil, has worked to keep the light out, and the foil sticks to the casing as it shrinks (as it loses water to the mushrooms) which helps prevent side pinning.
