Great bands who sell songs to corporations..........................................................
    #4166103 - 05/12/05 11:21 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I just heard a song by Pinback on a Nintendo commercial.

A few months ago I heard an older song by Mogwai on a Levi Jeans commercial.

:wtf:

What are your opinions about this sort of thing?

Is it even wrong at all?

I never said it was wrong. I just think it's questionable.
Hence the question

dude, do you know what's going on in Tibet?
have you seen how the Chinese treat the Tibetans?
guess who we pay to make our cheap stoopid shit... China.

anyway, i don't know about right and wrong,
but i do know whenever i hear Clapton all i think of is Yahoo SBC.

would you want the art you created to be forever associated with a PRODUCT?

i have friends that make music especially for TV shows and commercials, and i repect that.
but i wouldn't sell a hit song to a commercial if i was already a succesful artist, that's just whorish, imo.

I'll play speaker for the dead for a minute and add Bill Hicks' response to such a question.

Who cares?

If companys want to use my tracks in there commericals, that would be great.

If companys want me to change who or what I am, and want my music to change for them, fuck em.

Alot of times the artist might also be left out of the equation.

Unless I'm scoring, then I don't mind having artistic direction.

Keep in mind that it's possible these songs are used against the wishes of the artist/group.  How many times have greatest hits albums been put out where the band has no say on the tracklist?  I mean, if Jacko can own the rights to the Beatles' songs, I imagine any corporation has its price.

Either way, it sucks to have a decent song associated with consumerwhorism.

yes actually I used to be a member of a *free tibet* society 4 years ago. On that topic, what do you think about the Lama`s recent announcement where he stated that *china is good for tibet*?

Our stoopid shit, their hard earned wages, outsourcing manufacturing jobs is one of the reasons why China is rapidly developing, and a manufacturing job is often the one thing keeping a 16 year old girl from whoring herself on the street to slovenly businessmen.

so says bill hicks. Why is there such a neurotic obsession aimed at creating a gap between art and business? creativity is creativity and all of us buy products everyday.

I just saw that commercial myself (and I'm going to see pinback live tommorrow night )  It all depends on how the commercial uses the song.  One commercial that really pissed me off was either a Polo or Tommy Hilfucker commercial.  They were using CCR's Fortunate Son to hock some jeans.  Its supposed to be a protest song about how the sons of powerfulpeople were able to avoid the draft.  But those corporate bastards only played the lyrics:

"Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue."

then show some flag waving and it's supposed to make you feel all patriotic inside, but the rest of the lyrics go on to say:

"It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no"

peoples gots to pays the bills yo! artists have to find others ways to get paid because nowadays people download their whole album on soulseek.

i read in the wire that aphex twin got six figures for a celluar phone commercial.

i have no problem with artists taking advantage of a business opportunities.
