Garden cultivation?
    #416542 - 10/07/01 05:35 AM (22 years, 11 months ago)

I live in the north of england where liberty caps grow in the wild. I wondered if it would be possible to "seed" my lawns with liberty caps and grow some mushrooms next year?

Yes. I have done so and I get mushrooms in the spring and fall. I haven't yet seen a wild spring liberty cap in my area. I am still working out the method but basically I germinate the spores on agar and transfer clean agar wedges to quarts of sterilized horse manure. It takes a good 6 weeks or more to colonized the manure. Colonized manure can be planted in the lawn under the turf or scatter thickly on the grass in the early spring or late summer. You can also inoculate soaked bales of hay with the manure spawn in the spring for huge flushes in the fall.

Thanks for the tips!

Sterilised horse manure? Can you buy that? Not sure if i'd fancy cooking it in a pressure cooker!
