USPS "Smart Stamps"

If you're not worried about losing your freedom to communicate anonymously and without harassment then read this article about so-called 'Smart Stamps' that might be able to track sender/receiver information. This is just another liberty that Big Brother, and Big Corporate, would like to control.

Fuckin' amazing, isn't it? I'd rather have actual terrorist threats to concern myself with than having one's privacy evaporate. The Born-agains gotta get voted out next year or by the time they're out we'll be living in transparent houses and undergoing full cavity searches on the street.

You still need to be careful with stamps, even today. The lick-em type carry DNA from cells in your mouth if you lick them... always use a damp paper towel (or sponge) for stamps and sealing the letter, if it has 'badness' in it. The no-lick kind will pick up your finger prints on the sticky surface. Same thing with tape... be careful out there! Stamp machines carry a number which identifies the owner as well.

skin cells can also be found on nearly anything you touch. Skin cells have DNA, of course.

This is correct. We shed pounds upon pounds of dead skin. (No sarcasm here!) People leave a literal trail of dead skin as they walk around, sleep, etc. When you lick a stamp, you leave a large concentration of cells in the glue which makes it easy for the forensic lab to harvest. It is much more difficult to find the stray skin cell or two that fell into the envelope. Plus if a cell is stuck in the glue, it came from the person that licked the glue. No telling what floated into the envelope. The 'glue case' is much stronger in court.

Well, I don't think any law enforcement agency (maybe the feds) is going to put thousands of dollars into DNA investigation just for someone sending a bag of pot or a few spore prints.

And if you're sending serious amounts of illegal things through the postal system, you are pretty incredibly stupid anyways.

Now, if it were something terroristic they were after, sure, but small amounts of drugs.. every police force on the planet whines about having too little cash don't they?

Before Asscleft (Ashcroft) I would have agreed with you. That man would sell his mother to put somebody in jail for thinking about doing something 'immoral'.

I also agree that we are safe from this sort of thing for a while, but with the pace of technology and DNA databases the future could get ugly.

They are also doing this with barcodes on items. this way they can track everything everyone buys, and eventually everything will be paid with credit cards, so there is no escaping it.

edit*- its called RFID (radio frequency identification)

I've never heard of DNA being used to prosecute someone in court for drug charges.

> They make self-adhesive stamps. I use those.

Self-adhesive stamps pick up your finger prints and save them, if you aren't careful. When you peel the stamp off, you can see your finger anyplace that you touched on the glue. This doesn't go away when you put the stamp on the envelope. Using forensics, the police can remove the stamp from the envelope and lift the print from the stamp.

How do you seal the envelope? If you use tape, then the same problem occurs as with stamps and fingerprints. If you lick, then the DNA issue comes up. A damp sponge though...
