wbs wetness and brand?
    #4164178 - 05/12/05 12:06 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

im skeeeting over wbs wetness. I built a strainer out of an old windo screen, I have a collander. I can strain, I strain for like a half hour-hour but the wbs is still wet to the touch. Can someone tell me how wet wbs should feel after straining?

also on a related note, i use kroger wbs, what brand Wbs works well for the rest of you?

morning song wbs from wal-mart is pretty good. i just soak overnight, simmer, then strain and rinse water over it. i shake the strainer up and down a few times to get some of the bigger splashes of water out of it then i load up my jars. just shake excess water from the wbs in the strainer then load your jars...wbs should be wet to the touch.

I use the same morning song walmart brand and have also had success with it. I myself however usually soak for at least 36 hours (i find that when i dont i still get a jar or two out of 7 that become contaminated by bacteria) then I simmer for about 15-20 min until just a very few kernels have popped, i then rinse well with cold water, lightly drain (i never pay attention to wetness and still have success), and load into quart jars

Doesn't heat from ps cooking/boiling dry out the jars a bit? I always thought it did.

You guys are wasting too much time thinking about this. I follow Agar's method. Fill a pot about 2/3 full and add enough water to just cover the seeds by about 1 inch, aside from floaters. Check the pot in about 5-6 hours and you will notice that the seeds have absorbed the water and are now above the previous water line.

Continue this procedure until no appreciable water can be further absorbed. Rinse the seeds in cold water thoroughly and let them sit inside a colander for 20 minutes with aluminum foil covering the top.

After 20 minutes, load into you jars and PC. That's it. I've been using this method from day one and I've never had a problem.

By the way I use the cheap Bird Ration brand from Wal-Mart.

TURE! Listen to Agar. It WORKS!!! I just did an experiment with Wild Birdseed and Finch Feed. Both with B+, both prepared w/ agar's meathod. The FINCH seems to be going much better... maybe b/c of more evenly spaced /sized grains?? I dunno but it's working a lot better than the PF jars for sure!! Took a week less, used the same amount of LC and got more spawn! Best of all worlds.
