    #4159360 - 05/10/05 08:19 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

picked up some 5-HTP today, and some St. John's Wort. are there any problems with mixing these two? should i just take the 5-HTP for awhile and see if that alone helps? what else could i take?

kthx.

You can take them both together. You might go slowly if you are using them to get off of regular antidepressants.

Check out Sam-E. Very good in some depressions. More expensive but from my experience in natural supplements, which is a lot, sam-e works the best. You may have to take high doses from 800 to 1600 mgs per day if you have more than mild depression.

You got ripped off on the 5-htp. We sell it for about half that.

Sam-e , maybe $60 or less a month in the high dose range. Shop around but beware of low quality sam-e. Check out Jarrow Formulas. They have very high quality at some of the best prices. :mushroom2:

Be careful taking them together. You can get something called serotonin syndrome. Symptoms include headache, increase in body temp and heavy sweating. If this happens, seek medical advice.

There should be no need to take both at the same time, as both are good individually. Expect results after 3-4 weeks though.

Dose= St J Wort up to 900mg (0.3% Hypericin) daily (AM)
Dose= 5 HTP 100mg daily (Bedtime)
Dose= SAMe 1600mg daily

I don't recommend this at all. I think its most wise to be COMPLETELY off of a prescription drug, particularly an SSRI, tricyclic, MAOI, et cetera, before beginning SJW, SamE, HTP, Ginkgo, whatever. And it never hurts to ask a doctor (though I think they're mostly idiots) or holistic specialist.

I had a near stroke that I swear was from St Johns Wort.

I'd been doing the stuff for 2 weeks and had what felt like a heart attack whilst overtaking a car at 60 mph !!!

Once I  got my senses together I drove home and spoke to my neighbor (she's a manager at the hospital) and she told me to go straight to A&E.

They wired me up for a ECG and the nurse gasped at the results and said in a loud voice "OH MY GOD!"

Turned out a blood clot had passed through my heart and lodged in my lungs !!!  :eek:

I was in hospital for over a month and they pumped me full of Warfarin and other anticoagulants which didn't have any effect for ages because St Johns Wort changes the enzymes in your liver therefore rendering other drugs useless !!!

When they eventually kicked in I nearly OD'd on the stuff !!!

I'll never touch that shit again.  :frown:

Lucky it didn't make it to my brain..

There's not much research so far into the effects of St Johns Wort.

Be careful ppl.

Is it fair to blame it all on the st j's? I mean , you dont want to put somebody off that could highly benefit from taking it...
Personally, i wouldn't take all of them together, i think there should only be need for one and if your not sure which one then maybe get sum one to muscle test or use a pendulum to find out.
