Visible spores do matter on syringes. What do you think?
    #4161615 - 05/11/05 01:29 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Well I'm currently on day 6 of my incubating Puerto Ricans with 1 Qt. WBS. I have a small amount of growth in 2 jars so far and the rest are too hard to tell. I hear a lot of people talking about how aggressive PR is, so I bought some from SporesDirect. Not my usual vendor mind you, but bought them anyways.

The I received 2 syringes from these guys and both syringes were clear. I mean crystal clear, not one speck. I quickly learned from you guys that this didn't matter and that spores would be present regardless of what you can or can't see in the syringe.

Well I can tell you from my personal experience that what you can and cannot see does matter when it comes to colonization times.

You see, I usually order from Lil' Shop of Spores, and all his syringes are filled with black clumped up spores. They're visible from 2-3 feet away. I have bought B+ and EQ from this vendor and my colonization times range from 7-10 days.

The PR, EQ, and B+ have all been done using WBS and in the same TiT incubator under the exact same conditions. Now unless someone is going to tell me that Puerto Ricans are slow colonizers using WBS, I think I can reasonably conclude that what you see in the syringe does in fact MATTER.

Based on my personally experiences, I am going to go on record and say that clear syringes suck. Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm going to add a simple poll to make this easy for everyone to answer.
It doesn't matter if you can see spores in the syringe.

No, it doesn't matter. All syringes colonize at the same time for the same strain.

i agree, clear vendor syringes take a few days longer than my home-mades. i mean crystal clear, no flecks at all visible, whereas i only use 1 or 2 scrapes off a print into a 1/4 full 1/2 pint jar

I have had a similar issue.  My crystal clear syringe took about 3.5 - 4 week to colonize using the PF method(B+).  When I make my own syringes I use 1 print to make four syringes.  Why you ask?  Because I can.  I know it is overkill but I like the deep purple water with spores floating around in it.  My  syringes take, on average, a week less to fully colonize then a purchased syringe.  :strokebeard:

I use 1 syringe - 1 print. Faster than clear ones? Sure as hell.

in my experience, i like to see the spores in the syringe. when i make a syringe i use 60-70 ml's of water and put a whole cap worth of spores in it. it makes 3 syringes for me. i've made syringes so dark you couldn't see threw them and they did just as well as the three i make now. more spores is good, but way too many is just a waste.

spores are microscopic...you might not always see them in a syringe.
and when you do see them...their is a shit load in the syringe.

I like to see a few spores floating around...but I think that dark purple syringes are a waste of spores.

but to each their own!~

It doesn't matter, spores are microscopic. If a few chunks are visible, theres thousands in there.

I agree with this. My clear syringes i ordered from spores direct colonized some half pints in 9 days.

depends on print size.  i just got my largest print last night from my first bulk harvst and i could EASILY get 15 or 20 good 12cc syringes from it... it's about an inch accross but very very dark

Words of wisdom. Too many spores translates into too many substrains germinating. It matters little if it colonizes faster if a thousand substrains are competing for your small jar of food. There is more to this hobby than simply colonization times. I challenge anybody to produce a monster flush of mushrooms from a dark purple syringe.

If you have one 10 cc syringe that is severly dark you can make at least another 20 syringes with 1/2 cc per syringe mixed with 9 1/2 cc distilled water.

Well, you didn't lay out any specific parameters to follow for this challenge, so I'll tell you that exact thing has been done many times over with no trouble.

Dark syringe:

Vendors are not vendors for FUN, they are in a for PROFIT business.

Consiquently, the spore load in their syringes are calibrated to provide enough spores to create multiple germination points, so-as-to germinate & begin colonization of the media they are injected into.

However, being for profit, it makes sense they stretch a print to it's max syringe making capacity, as - more syringes from a single print = more PROFIT.

As in animal husbandry, a bull with a semen load heavy with viable sperm is prefered. As that circumstance optimizes the possibility of fertilization.

The same holds true for a spore syringe.

Anyone would/should prefer an optimal spore load in a syringe. So long as there are a few hundred spores in the syringe solution, the job gets done - if all else is optimal.

A heavy large thick print is perfectly capable of producing fifty 10/12 ml syringe loads in optimal proportions of fluid to spore load ratio, that is upon close inspection - visible to the naked eye.

Faint - light, nickel or quarter coin size prints would not do the same.

Clear syringes WORK, syringes you can see visible spores in seem to work QUICKER.

Syringes that are very dark with spores is IMHO - a waste. But, that is not to say - if you are making your own & have plenty of prints - don't do it.

In my humble experiance, very dark syringes do not give you faster germination / colonization than ones where only a few spore clumps are visible.

If it WORKS WELL, it's all good & to each his own - preferance..
