lion's mane: liquid to sawdust
    #4160113 - 05/11/05 01:29 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

i have ten liquid culture syringes of lion;s mane and i was wondering if anyone has knowledge of direct inocultaion into wood based fruiting substrate?

i have read many posts here not recommending into pasteurized strae or poo. but have read nothing of liquid to wood. i figure if so many cultivation supply stores are selling fruiting kits with nothing more than liquid mycelium and a sealed fruiting bag, what makes this possible.

yeah dont do it. The grain adds much nutrients to the sawdust. when liquid culture is used to inoculate substrate it grows really weak and whispy, no good.
Put those syringes in the fridge and use a couple on some rye grain, then in a few weeks put the grain on the sawdust.

I have inoculated SW syringes, including lions mane, directly to sawdust based substrate with great success.

wideweb,
have you used direct inoculation into a fruiting substrate? or just into sawdust spawn?

as far as mycelium being whispy if the spawn stage is skipped, what about mushroom kits consisting of a syringe of tissue and a fruiting substrate that the buyer inoculates directly. i know that the mykobag i have is made of all kinds of things and not just a standard sawdust substrate. i know it would be possible to make this work somehow.
wideweb, can you please give me some details as to your sucess? thanks

  Do as you please.  Maybe our ideas of success are different.

please let wideweb have a chance to respond.
i am not going to take the first persons response as fact. if you have more data to defend your stance please use it and we can continue this debate in a scholarly way.
for instance my rebuttal to you sir has been this whole time,"how are the cultivation kits that are being sold made? and yes they are succesful, even by stamets' value" he is selling them too you know

3 petri dishes of a culture placed in an eberbach blender, one liter of sterilized water.  Inoculated on 20 sawdust bran bags.
3 petri dishes in the blender with the water inoculated on grain, then inoculated another 20 sawdust/bran bags.

Both were started at the same time direct liquid inoculation took longer even though a step was omitted then the bags done with the grain spawn.

Mycelia on the liquid inoculated blocks was light compared to the ones with grain.  Fruits were weak compared to the ones on grain.  Not saying they  liquid inoculated bags didn't fruit.  But I feel that the grain spawned substrate provides much needed nutrients to support healthy mushroom development that supports a good three flushes.

The same strain was used for the tests.

I wasnt trying to be rude.  Just my perception on the world of mushroom growing.  Just one point of view.  As i said do as you please.  I do as i please to put cash in my pocket and the quicker my fruites of my labor get to the store or the resturant the better.  I dont have time to waite for things i try and find the quickest most efficient way to get to the end product.

Saw dust is weak on its own, so you supplement with bran, but paul even talks about supplementation at spawning.  That is the use of grain spawn.  The more the merrier, the more the quicker and more prolific the flushes are.

Granted all things work if givin time, i just dont have that time. :sun:

aha.
i checked the supposed colonization time included with the kit, and it is saying nearly a month before fruiting. not too bad, but i bet it is faster with a grain intermediate.:) will use a grain spawn to inoculate sawdust. thank you much

Fungo,

I made fruiting substrate from beech sawdust, 20% wheat bran, 1% gypsum. After sterilization, I made a tiny hole in the lid of the container and injected some of the SW bolus. Then sealed the container with tape. I will make a new post when the mane is fully matured.

As I said, I will post when the mane is fully grown. I am only demonstrating the container here. AHRRRRH.

im really interested in alternative, ie reusable, containers for fruiting of these wood lovers.. man using plastic bags is just sooo hard for me to do.. it seems really backwards in this movement of good food/medicine to use petroleum products that just get dumped after we get our pound or so of mushrooms... i wonder how well they would do in just regular mouth mason jars.. quart sized or something.. thanks for testing that thing wideweb, can't wait to see what it looks like
peace

The jar was crashed bc I layered several jars in the autoclave. It still remained good.
