Old SOGGY Cakes = Contamination?
    #4158705 - 05/10/05 06:05 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Ok, my gulf coast cakes are getting kind of old. They've all had 2-3 flushes each, they've been dunked already, and some of them are getting kind of...well..weird.

Is this cake contaminated? Or is it just old? I can't tell.

I took one of the cakes out, to scrape the old vermiculite off it and dunk it again, and it literally started crumbling apart when I began scraping off the vermiculite. It was crumbly and wet & I probably could have scraped the whole cake into the sink. That seemed odd to me. Aren't they supposed to get HARDER as they get older and not SOFTER?

I need some general guidance on caring for old cakes, and knowing when they are "done for." Do you still dunk if they seem overly wet? Is that a humidification problem? Or, is that a contamination problem?

What are some warning signs for old cakes that they are "dangerous" and need to be removed from the growing chamber?

Looks old to me. I can't see any contams in the pic. (i've been wrong before though)
If you can't see any contams, try breaking one apart and see if theres any contams inside.

Don't know 'bout the other stuff.

Yeah, it doesn't really look contaminated, but definitely discolored. and the major point of interest, (towards the top in the center), seems darker than the rest of the cake. But it doesn't really look like contamination, just different.

The one that I scraped for dunking did not seem to have anything inside it, it was just really wet and kind of falling apart.

And they are all VERY heavy compared to my TC cakes.

But, those are admitedly quite dry because they have taken so long to develope and fruit.

My main concern is that they seem so wet and I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this.

Update:

I chunked one of these cakes. I decided I was going to scrape off the top (old) layer of vermiculite as recommended in the double ending casing tek, and it literally fell apart in my hands.

It seemed almost like there was mud inside. I could have squeezed water out of this cake.

Maybe I just chunked an ok cake, I don't know. There were no odd colors really, it just did not seem right.

I'll watch the others and see what happens to them.

When you make a post there is a little button that says "add pictures to this post" or something like that. You upload them to your gallery, and then you copy the web address of the photo into your post using the IMG button.

Also: the perfect word for my cake would be SOGGY.

The cakes are spent and are being overcome by bacteria.
