How much Poo?

My chameleon has some PF (BRF) jars in the incubator that will be fully colonized in a week. She wants to take two jars and spawn to some Tenn Stud PrePasturized Poo. How much Poo should she get? Their website says the optimum ratio is 1:10, but she wants to know if she should get 10 pounds, or if 5 pounds will be enough? What size container are we talkin about here too? It's hard for her to put into perspective how much Poo is really needed.
I know that she could go get some poo for free, and next time might try that. But for now she wants the Pre Pasturized shit and doensn't have the time to hunt for the free shit

I ordered 5LBS of High Mountain Compost.. probably about the same consistancy / size while plopped into a container. I've got it in a 16 qt container spawned with 5, 1/2pt jars. It's about 3 1/4 in deep. I'm not sure what youd want if you wanted to order 10LBS. I've heard that 8, 1/2 pint jars is optimal for 5lbs of substrate. Some say 10% spawn, some say 25.. some say 50%. More is good because it colonizes faster if youve got it.
Hope that helped

2 1/2 pints? Definatly 5 pounds. Thats like 4-5 quarts of poo (5 pounds) 2 1/2 pints is only 1/2 of a quart of spawn. Thats about 10%, but its better to use more like 20-30% spawn rate. That will work though (what you have) with the 5 pounds.

I recently did three 1/2 pints to 5lbs poo and it is working out very well. A little slow in the colonization phase, but I think thats a result of my myc being slow in general. Overall it is working out perfectly and should be ready to case any day now.

it's as a result of your low spawn ratio; i try to use 2 qts to 5 lbs. that would be 8 1/2 pt jars.
what temps are you keepin it at? i personally incubate mine in the low 80's / high 70's, because, as i understand it, the self-incubation usually occurs when the substrate is at least 3 in. deep. the volume of my tubs is geared more towards surface then depth.

My little tinkerings have lead me to believe (in small scale mush/cult) a 3 inch (+/- 1/2 inch) substrate depth is about optimal in 12 or 16 quart trays, or any tray for that matter, no matter the surface area. With that depth & a lot of surface area, you usualy get good crops & multiple flushes, if you have a good casing cover & even pin sets.

haven't gotten past the tub phase yet. got a move coming up, and after that, i'll pay a visit to a local appliance repair store. then come the trays.
just screwin' around in the mean time

a spawn ratio of 5 to 1 works best for me.
the faster the spawn run...the less chances of contamination.

Isn't 6 inches better? Or are you claiming diminishing returns beyond 3 inches?

So psilocyben, The 2 quarts that you use to 5lbs. Does that give you about a 3 inch (+/- 1/2 inch) substrate depth like agar uses? Or is it more/less?
This is way more than what scatman suggested above for five lbs.
Guess there is different opinions on what works best

I get diminishing returns beyond 4 inche sub depth, not including the casing portion? Longer colonization times is part of it.
Plus, after the 4th or 5th flush, a substrate become very contam prone. Simply because once - you miss a tiny bit of base/root when harvesting, the green goes after it (as it begins to rot), even if patched.
Below is a pic of a 4 inch sub, about 6th or 7th flush. Size peaked on the 3rd & 4th & declined from there. Sub has pulled away from the sides almost 3/4 inch. Last harvest, then into the garden compost pile - this baby goes.

I did not SUGGEST the amount you said. You said you had two jars and wanted to know, 5 or 10 pounds. You could do 5 pounds with a couple half pints BUT I also use 1.5-2 quarts per 5 pounds. The quarts are only 3/4 filled so thats about 6 full half pints to 5 pounds. Thats also WELL BROKEN UP BIRD SEED. I doubt you will break up cakes as small as millet kernals, but the smaller the peices the better. I suggest more like 3 times what you have...but what you have will work..

<goes back up and reads>
excuse me.
I didn't mean to say you suggested. I see you just said that it will work okay.
I will use more cakes than two for the five lbs., or maybe save some poo for the next grow and do some WBS. How long do you suppose the poo will be okay to keep around? storage?
Thanks man
