I covered the tops in tin foil...still too wet?
    #4157939 - 05/10/05 02:37 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I couldnt find brown rice flour around here so I just ground up brown rice. It got to the consistency of coarse flour...too fine?

I did a regular mixture of 1/2-1/4-1/4 vermiculite-brown rice flour-water and added the water last, slowly to make sure it didnt get to wet. It was like sticky sand? It held itself nice and airy and I jus dropped it in the jars and put some vermiculite on top and closed the lids. Put tin foil over them, put elastics on the rims - Boiled them for a little over an hour.

I looked about 12 hours after cooking and they were spongy and fairly dense. You cant see water moving inside so maybe it just compressed along the outside? Ill take pictures if that would help  Thanks

Sorry for not reducing the size but you cant see enough detail otherwise...

Seems pretty wet - its stuck to the sides in some places...

Consistency...

Another angle...

Also, some jars have space that allows the vermiculite to move freely/ Im worried about contams - should I be?

It sounds like you over cooked them. Did you use a rag on the bottom of the pot? The water boils up under the foil sometimes and gets your cakes soaked. Also when you boil them, you have to make sure the foil only covers the top. It seems like you used too much water in the pot that your boiling them in...

Nah I didnt use a rag - Are you sure its not the rice flour forming a dough? In which case it would suck anyway. Start over? :/

(When you use electrical tape on top, do you also need tin foil?)

I has happ 2 me b4. The water does get in. The measurments you described are all correct. Put the rag on the bottom and rollup your foil, ease back on the water in the pot and 50min on med should do the trick.

Always be on the safe side bro, use the foil as a prophylactic. As for the jars, better to start over then waste your time with that mud mixture... Good luck

I'd still try one jar, if you have extras, and save those and use them if the one works out. It looks wet to me too sort of, but also like it may be ok.

I'm not a cake person though so take my suggestions with a grain of salt.

I've had that same problem. I've even tried using the wet jars, it doesn't work. You'll save your self a lot of time. I'm only trying 2 help ya bro. Just follow the simple steps above and you'll be ok. Also if U can muster up the flow, a cheap PC is like $8 bux...

Way to wet. Plus -

Use a rag next time

And why would Brown Rice Dough up :smirk:

I'd double end case as well...Sprinkle (until the bottom is Almost covered) Verm. on the bottom of the jar and then add the mixture...

That way IF you have to much water, then the Dry verm. will suck it up and it shouldn't be a big deal...If the dry verm turns into mud then you put water to much water in (or it got in during sterilyzation)
