Should mycelium grow like this?
    #413940 - 10/04/01 05:15 PM (22 years, 5 months ago)

This is basically my first time to have a completely colonized pf jar. I just used brf and verm. and magic micron disks. For some reason the mycelium stopped growing about 3/4 of the way up the jar. There is a very distinct line on all my jars where growth for some reason just stops. Is this normal? I should also say that there has been no signs of contamination and the mycelium looks to be very healthy.

I've found that when that happens, its usually a sign that the substrate is dry there.

Most likely you either cooked the jars way too long or you didnt use enough water in the mix.

Could the mm disks have anything to do with it? I only cooked the jars for 30 min. at 15psi.

could that distinct line be your dry verm layer? If it is then that is entirely normal.
Peace,
Rashiki.

No, there's no way I made it that deep. I remember filling the jars all the way up to a 1/4 in. of the top of the jars. I already took them out and cased them anyway so I guess it's of no consequence. Thanks.

Good thing you already took the cakes out of the jars--that's what you should have done. If the mycelium doesn't grow on your cake (especially near the top) then it was too dry. You probably had your lids on too loose.
