Drying Chamber Wire Mesh

I'm planning to make a drying chamber to dry shrooms using this guide: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/3372/pag/6
My question is, could I use a relitivly fine screen (about 1/4 of a cm holes) instead of 1/4 inch wire mesh?

Sure thing, as long as the holes are small enough so your desiccant doesn't fall thru.

So if the desiccant doesn't fall through my screen I don't need the cloth, correct?

actualy the mushrooms should be above the disiccant so that you dont have to worry about it falling through

I know, the guide says the cloth prevents desiccant from falling into the water at the bottom. But does the cloth serve any other purpose?

the shrooms should be mostly dry to begin with, there shouldnt be any water at the bottom unless you're putting freshly picked mushies in there, that will render the whole prcess ineffective, it will over load the disiccant with moisture and wont allow them to fully dry.

You should put the fresh picked shrooms in a Tupperware with a screen supported about an inch from the bottom with a bunch of holes drilled in the sides of the Tupperware below the screen an place a box fan flat on top of that blowing into the Tupperware for a day or 2 then put then into a container with your desiccant to make them fully dry and you dont really need to make a space for the water to collect the desiccant is not really going to work too well anyway if its dripping wet

I would suggest you troll through your local thrift stores looking for an American Havest SnackMaster dehydrator, where you can sometimes find one for under $10.
Or, check the chain Marts for a new one @ $40.
If you ever get bulk harvests, you will spend tons of money on dessicants - lots of time & effort trying to dry them.
With a dehydrator, load, set & forget it.
