Pinhead Initiation questions
    #4156360 - 05/10/05 08:04 AM (12 years, 22 days ago)

Ive got my first batch of Pleurotus Ostreatus spawning right not. Today is day 9 and there looking really good. Ive kept the humidity at 90 - 95 % and the room temp at 67-69F. Internal bag temp has remaind at 80 with the exception of one day that it climed up to almost 90. Tomorow will be day 10 and while I might wait till this weekend, giving them a few extra days, to move them out to the grow room, my question is about Pinhead Initiation. The books I have read say I need to drop the air temperature to 55-60F for a few days to initiate pinning. I dont have an AC in the grow room and without one it would not be possible to drop the temp to 55. The temp in the grow room stays about 65F. The bags (5 of them) are about 3 feet long in 12 inch diameter polly tubes filled with cotton seed hulls. Will they pin if I dont drop the temp?

Ill post pictures later today.

In my experience: yes, they will.

So-called cold shocking is overrated. With room temps in the sixties, oysters will fruit just fine.

I have found that such an initiation period is really only necessary when trying to get a number of logs to fruit at exactly the same time. But, since you only have one it shouldn't be a problem. They will fruit, just not predictably.

Im not sure of the exact strain other than just Pleurotus Ostreatus. I got the spawn from the mushroompeople in Tenn. I asked the guy that I ordered from and he told me they are the white ones (cream colored). Next week Im ordering from a differnt supplier and will be getting some gray dove oysters and some pleurotus cornucopiae, golden oysters. Ye HA!

You might want to try flipping those over. My experience with vertical culture is the moisture will drain due to gravity to the bottom of the bag, where it will become too wet, while the top dries out. Flip them over a week into the process and it really helps.

That's really good advise and I had not thought of it. I have been watching them closely and the one day that the internal temp rose to 90F, one of the bags forced some liquid out the bottom as you can see in the picture above. The top of the bags still seem very moist in that there are water/condensation drops on the inside of the plastic. (see below) I think I will try turning them over like that next time. They have so much good growth on the tops right now that I hate to mess with them. Thanks for the suggestion!
