none. wrap them in moist paper towels, put them in a closed tupperwear, and put them over your computer monitor - leave it on. I guarantee if they are good seeds they will all pop within 2 days.

Your talking about mj right?

Whats the point of the paper towels, a risky transplant? They germinate fine anywhere moist... say a growing medium?

risky transplant? I know crudloads of peeps who use this method, and it's never failed for me. I usualy get 95% germination, and ive never had a bad transplant. It's not hard to put a sprouted seed in soil, anyone who messes that up is very clumsy or a nitwit, and in that case they probably shouldn't be a smoker to begin with.

If you transplant them as soon as germination begins you should deffinately not have any problems, mj takes well to transplants at any age really IMHO.

I still don't see the point

pop the seed in your medium and it will sprout all the same as a paper towel and grow on uninterupted.

I have had better germination rate, by making sure they germinate, instead of just putting it in the ground.

either way would work, but I start mine indoors and prep them for the metal halide in the sky.

Honestly I find the paper towel method superior. Why you ask? Take 10 seeds and place them in the paper towel, whichever one has the longest root is the strongest plant. You can save time if you want only strong growing plants out of the bunch. Pretend you have 6 growing strong, 3 medium and 1 is just very small. This reminds me of a cat giving birth to kittens, you have a runt. Now the runt is either more likely to die, or just has less genetic properties that we like. With plants, I am rather finicky with my selection. I only have select garden space and only want the best, strongest in my group.

An analogy is 1 have a space craft with 4 other seats. We are going to mars and we will be here a long time. I want a very select crew so we can survive, personally in this case. I would only select good friends for the trip.

Either way, the paper towel propagation method is excellent for most seeds. The only method it sucks for is for non pod seeds or non shell seeds. If the seed is like a wheat barely kind, straight to soil is actually a better method of propagation then paper-towel.

The main benefit to the paper-towel method is that you can speed up the propagation by a week in some cases. With yopo seeds for example, after the paper towel method, seeds pop in a day or two max. If you just put them in soil, sometimes it takes over a week. If you are an enthusiastic gardener, these little details turn you on and make you happy.

Actually, Flux... If a seedling shows signs of faster growth than others because of a longer root stem, it could mean 2 things. Either it's a male, ( because males tend to "extend" more than females at first), or, it just may be a different stain with different growth characteristics. It all depends on the strain... I've had seeds that took 2 weeks to sprout, and then when I transplanted what I thought were the "healthiest" ,(because of size), They turned out to be male... Then again, I've had the scrawniest looking seedling turn into a monster indica, or indica/sativa bush; While, what at first seemed to be a potentially majestic plant, (because of sprout size), turned out to be a pure sativa and a male at that. And sativas just don't do too well outdoors where I live.
Also depends on your seed source. I've always chosen seeds from bags of weed I liked whether they were tiny little seeds or big fat mamas. It's like a box of chocolates...yada yada yada.
But yes you are right in that the healthiest of the sprouts are obviously your best bet. Just don't count your chickens before the eggs hatch... Give EACH seed at least a month to show it's characteristics.
