Has anyone ever heard of or tried making a 50/50 mix using bird seed and verm? Will it contam easy or even work... because the verm would provide the moisture and the seed would provide the nutrients... and thats pretty much all the mushroom needs... i guess.

This sounds like it will def. contam. Why not just do some myc transfer over to jars of grain and use that as spawn then case with a non-nutricious substance such as coir(my fave casing), but i could be wrong. Anyone please feel free to correct me.

my monkey has a jar of grain that is nicely colonised, and he wants to use coir having bought a little brick of coir. If he gets the colonised grain, breaks it up and covers it with wet coir - providing humidity and heat, is that it? Appears to easy to monkey?

Paul, are you suggesting using birseed to case with? If yes, I must assert an empatic no. Birdseed and verm is a good substrate for use in jars, not a casing layer. I may seem to contradict an earlier post, but after perusing it sober, I had second thoughts.
