Asero? rubra found, what next?
    #4154951 - 05/09/05 10:26 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Hey everyone. I've been mushroom hunting for as long as i can remember, edible ones mainly as it is a long time family and cultural tradition, done it both in europe and here in australia.
Anyway, i was walking down the street last week on my way back from a meeting and i found two Asero? rubra by the side of the footpath in a garden outside of an office complex, question is, what shall i do with them? I have contacted a myceologist (sp?) but have had no reply sofar, and i have since dried the specimins, i also have a sample of the ground they were groing in, and the entire "plant".
So, what should i do with them?
Here are some pictures:

Hi SPHINXBS,

Welcome to the Shroomery.

Interesting specimens. A quick google search revealed that Asero? rubra is common in Australia and has been found throughout the tropics. It has even been found in Georgia USA. I doubt a mycologist would be especially interested in your collection. Unless there is something which makes your find more significant than others, I would pitch them. If you want to save the specimens for some future purpose you can store them in a sealed glass jar with desiccant.

can't be that common because i've NEVER seen one in the flesh before in my life, but they are native to australia. One other thing, which made me doubt a little bit is, that, my specimins have 6 pairs of "thorns", whereas the Asero? rubra specimin i saw on the internet had like 8-12 pairs. I'll probably toss them unless i can find something out about them or find out that they aren't Asero? rubra

Your specimen *is* Asero? rubra. This is a notoriously variable clathroid species in which the number of arms can vary from five to twenty-two. It can be locally common in Australia, but has a patchy distribution and is considered rare in Victoria. Asero? rubra is the most abundant phalloid in New Zealand and has been recorded from a wide range of localities in Australasia, the Americas, Africa, and Europe.

yep, I've stumbled across these many times. Found some amazing specimens in my favourite psilocybe subaeruginosa spot.

I remember a few years ago reading about it in a "poisonous plants of the forest" book. It described symptoms of ingestion as "intoxication, delusions, excitement and confusion" followed by vomiting and stomach pain. I almost considered eating some just to see what they were like, until I found one and saw that they are one of the most disgusting fungi around.

Nice find though, thanks for sharing
