i've seen it posted that you dont have to case h poo to get good results. it would be nice to skip the time and effort if its not realy nesisary. does anyone have an opinion on this?

casing helps prevent contams which alone makes it worth it. also it makes a moisture retaining microclimate which is also worth it since mushrooms are 90-92% water u need all the water u can get as well as contam prevention. id case it if i were u but, u dont have to like uve heard

Nothing beats a proper casing layer, but H/poo can be fruited without one. If you decide to do this, make sure you can provide decently high humidity. Fruiting poo in it's own tub can provide the right humidity environment without a casing layer.

am i more likely to get a more even pinset if i dont case? i'v only done one casing, and it was far from good as far as first flushes.

Hard to say, I've seen some pretty nice flushes from non-cased poo. I've also seen the best pinsets from casing, hands down. It really depends on how even you can get your casing layer, and how even the substrate is below that. Your timing when initiating fruiting is a big factor too.

on a related note, is it true that a thicker substrate will give thicker fuller fruits (due to increased water retention?), making it in some ways superior to a thinner casing substrate w/ greater surface area?

I have to agree with the others and say case it. The quantity and size of mushrooms produced are directly related to how much moisture is provided; a properly applied and maintained casing will provide the moisture for maximum production.

I nuke mine in an autoclave bag, with a rubber band holding the bag closed, but not so tight - steam cannot escape (otherwise bag explodes).
2.5 minutes 3 times & flipping the bag & allowing it to rest 1 minute between intervals does it for me. If it is a bit dry - afterwards - add some boiled water (cooled first).

...in most cases.
the largest cubes I have ever seen grown...have been on substrate without a casing layer.
but...there were fewer fruits on the substrate!~

why does a casing layer result in a larger pinset? does it have to do with heat retention?

Ive always been curios if you kept your bulk subs at 99% RH and good air exchange with adequate lighitng if you can get the same pinsets and you could casing.....ive always had this thought. Peace

Thanks roadkill, i also have an indea for a modified pf cake tek if anyone wants to try it out, its the same mixture i use in making mycobags, 1part aged cow dung, 1 part simmered rye Via Magash tek, and .5part vermiculite, add water to hydrate manure/verm to field capcity, put into half pints, add vermic layer and pc/inject as normal, i know it works excellent in bags, and i am sure it would work very vrey well in 1/2pints fruited as cakes.
Peace
