hey out there in shroom land,
doing my first attempt with wbs and another with whole rice grains. soaked wbs for 24 hrs and simmered the rice for about 30 mins. jarred them up and only had coffee filters available to cover the top. coffee filter then the screw on lids. here is my question: should i be alright with the coffee filters or do i need to go visit the post office? Also, the innoc holes in the lid, do they need to be taped off or left open so the jars can exchange gases? the jars are in the autoclave as i post this so help me out if you can. peace

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

will it be too late to put the polyfil in after they are autoclaved? i guess i am getting in too much of a hurry. just received 7 new syringes and am probably rushing it.

Yeah, you should put the tyvek or polyfil on before you pressure cook the jars.

well 1 of those syringes will be toast if you dont wait. You can not under any circumstances open a jar after it is autoclaved unles you have a flow hood or very good glove box

dont have a flow hood or glove box yet. i did put holes in the lid over the coffee filter so i could knock them up. i realize the coffee filter will be punctured when they are inoculated, can i tape over them after that to hope and prevent contams or will i sacrifice gas exchange if i do so, or can i still put in some polyfil to help out. i guess i could take them home and add the poly and then re-autoclave them tonight.

The coffee filters are not supposed to be under your jar lid. It goes on the outside to act as an additional dust cover. Your coffee filters are probably going to get all wet and fall apart when you shake your jars. Good Luck.

thanks hip chick, hopefully not but i get what i get for being stupid. i am not going to use them as is. after your responses i will take them home and redo the lid situation with some polyfil and then the coffee filter and then reautoclave tonight sometime. thanks to ya oddish, tahoe and hippie chick. peace

not only that coffee filters are NOT microfilters like tyveck and polyfil..... u'll get contamination up the wazoo if u use them as filters over ure lids. like hippie chick said, u use them as a large dust particle filter OVER a polyfil or tyvek filter lid
