Yes, constantly.

>do i just leave the humidifier running all day?

No, it should only be on for 10-20 minutes every hour or two.

is there a way you can leave the humidifier on for a longer amount of time, less times a day??? or does it need to be every 1-2 hours in a 24 hour period??

Maybe, your setup will depend. What you dont want is a fog. Mushrooms need to breathe too..cant do it if your drowning them in mist. Stick your head in a fog filled chamber and see how well you breathe

The only way to keep a CONSTANT humidty, thats not to high, and not to low..is to set it on a constant timer. Anywhere from 10-30 minutes on could be ok if the fog doesnt build up quickly (this will depend on your air exchange, size of container, ambiant humidity, whats in the chamber, and a number of other variables). Then it would need to be off for a couple hours, then on for the same.

Theres a soda bottle tek around, if you put it into a few 2 liters first, then into the chamber, it gets rid of alot of the mist and you can leave it on all the time. This will still not provide you with air exchanges.

what kind of timer do i need???

my set up is as follows....
i have a plastic closet with zippers like for suits and dresses or whatever.... then i have four shelves with a total of 12 trays with BRF cakes... some half pint and 1 pint B+ cakes... an ultrasonic humidifier going through a hole in the front.... i taped up the hole so no air would get out and connected hose that runs up the back of the shelves and pumps out humidity over the top sides of the shelves....

there has been some thick fog in there so i fanned it out with my hands and now zipped the closet back up with out the humidifier on...

it sounds like my best bet would be a timer... what do you think???
and thanks for the help i really appreciate it...

lately i've been using a little bit diff. timeing than most here it seems:

ultra timed at 20 min. every 3 hours, full blast
coomist timed 30 min. during ultra cycle, off an hour, on 30 min. then off till next ultra cycle

so plenty of air exchange daily and keeps things nice n humid

ultra cycle = 20 minutes on every 3 hours, he meant the coolmist is run along with the ultrasonic then the coolmist stays on an extra 10 minutes after the ultrasonic cuts off. then an hour later the coolmist comes on for another 30 minutes then turns off until the ultrasonic comes on again. At least that's my understanding of it. Doesn't need to be nearly that complicated. I recommend cool mists as they provide constant fresh humid air, so you don't have to worry so much about fanning. But since you have an ultra, definately get a timer and limit it, a little too much humidity won't be so bad for cakes, but if they grow mycelium on the stems id say run the ultrasonic less frequenty. Definately try to fan several (and I do mean several as in 5-6+) times daily to get the CO2 out (the myc produces CO2). Hope this helps!
