gnats gnats gnats
    #4152190 - 05/09/05 02:23 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hello everybody, this is my first post in any forum always been paranoid but hell everybody else is doing it so why not. Heres a question about gnats ive searched all over for and couldnt find.Is it really safe to eat mushrooms from a casing that has gnats?Ive read about ways to treat them, but still though is it safe? That seems kind of nasty even though if its been treated. The first successful casing started pinning The mushrooms look very healthy no contams. I noticed all of these little bastards coming out of the top layer. Around six years ago there was a chance to drink tea a friend made out of shrooms he picked in a field that had maggots in the cow poo.He was making tea but his mom walked in the front door and it never got finished he freaked out and through the shrooms in the bottom of the garbage and poored the tea out before she walked into the kitchen.

safe to eat  :crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2:

the only gnat treatment that i'd think twice about is insecticide spray - but so long as you don't spray it directly onto your mushrooms, don't sweat it.

Shirley--

I recently experienced some deformation from a maturing fruit after drenching it with potassium salts of fatty acids insecticidal soap solution (diluted from concentrate to 2.5%).  Things appear to be recovering, but THAT LITTLE BASTARD that was down in the casing is alive.

How is your knowledge of Neem oil spray?

I was reading your contribution to the FAQ on this one.

Gratsie.  :sun:

Thanks shirley knott, Ill go ahead and keep it and Thanks GnuBobo. .Ive heard of Neem oil,I think it has lots a uses for many things its worth a try I think I might have to order some for later use or if it gets here in time for this casing .I think my problem with getting these gnats was from using some bagged cow manure compost I never stuck it in the oven to sanitize it was pulled straight out of the bag and cased with vermiculite I think it was like 40% manure 40% verm 20% brf cakes. How would the neem oil be applied like dilluted with water or straight up oil sprayed on it after the flush of shrooms is removed.
Oh yeah another quick question I probaly know the answer to it, do I take the casing out of the container to pick all the mushrooms on the sides and bottoms?Im thinking I do.Theres so many mushrooms I lose count .

Oil will kill the adults by suffocating them. The cure however is to kill the larvae, which most likely are in the soil of your houseplants. Simply inspect all of your houseplant's soil to determine which one the gnats are emerging from. There are two cures I know of. One is to drown them. Place the entire pot containing your houseplant into a five gallon bucket of water. Make sure the water level is at least two inches above the level of the top of the flowerpot. Leave it there for 48 hours without any sort of bubbler or anything else. This will drown the larvae. The second cure is a BT that is specially made to target fungus gnats. Here is one source for this. http://www.gardensalive.com/product.asp?pn=1962&ss=gnats

Is that gardens alive product safe for use with casing soil?  Will it harm mycelium/mushrooms?

Thanks.

I know neem oil works wonders for keeping most bugs away from pot.

so are they safe to eat? should you only make tea from shrooms grown on one that has gnats to kill off anything? Would the drying of the shrooms be enough to kill them?
