"Paul Stamets, TMC book" opinions anyone?
    #4151097 - 05/08/05 07:45 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Hey guys!

Does anyone own TMC and believe that it's something that is very useful / fun to read / grateful to own?

I'm considering buying this book and curious what people's thoughts are on it. Thanks!

To put it simply it's the mushroom growers Bible.

The TMC gives you a solid base on classic mycology technique and is a dense source of good information. It's the Bible of growing mushrooms, but like the Bible, it doesn't deal with some of the new ideas and inventions. For example the TMC covers basic agar techniques in a beautifully written text with pictures, but it doesn't say anything about using half pint jars as petri dishes, scraping the surface, and drawing off the mycelium chunks (i.e. the mechanics of using agar more practically). The point is that the TMC is a good base, but you'd be wise to use the Shroomery search often.

What do I think?

It cost me 34.99 + tax.  Some isn't the most usable for the typical home cultivator but almost all of it is invaluable.  I've read, and reread.. and highlighted this book within the first two weeks owned.  It's the most informative pile of paper I've ever laid eyes on.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

yup.. i have it.. buy it on amazon you can get it new or used.. the used is cheaper..

I baught mine new read the whole book over and over. excellent book every cultivator should have.

I left reading it with lots of useful information, a better understanding of mushrooms, cultivation, and contams. Also with far more confidence in cultivating and trying new things. Much more so then what the forums can give you. *no offence forums i love you*

It is the best basics handbook out there hands downs, I've had my copy since "84" and have had to tape the covers on through repeated openings (100's)! It's something any serious grower owns.

I do...I do

---

I really like reading the TMC

I have read it front to back twice...and still look through it.

I'd like to see Paul revise it...but I don't think he ever will.

Plus I'd like to see him edit it...there are several errors in it!~

The TMC is a good base book...it really needs to be updated with new growing methods that have been developed since he wrote it back in the 1980's.

Just got TMC a week ago... most things in there are generalized by the teks on this site, but that book looks way deep into things and definately has a lot of great information in it, read it once, or twice, or a million times, and have it around for reference!

On the Stamets note, his new book sounds realllllly interesting... how mycelium can solve a lot of environmental problems etc... out in Aug 2005 i believe...

I got a copy of his newer book at half priced. Its supposed to be the same thing, more recently updated, but minus the contam section. "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms" by Paul Stamets.

The sun was pulling cheap shots doing commercial body tricks, Behind the back, Under the leg, I think he even did a headspin, On a crossfader that sounded whack, But looked excellent, All of the sudden it gets dim, The crater face steps in, Puts mexican drumbreaks on the Technics, He's like "Let's begin", He conducted an orchestra so dope the sun started sweatin' him, I guess he'd expected to win on pure artistic merit, Composing complex plays with nothin but soundbytes, Burned out the lights, Made MCs too self conscious quit the master mics, For a thousand nights, It continued without a single slip up, Except once the record skipped, But it kinda sounded cool.
