Growth through Casing
    #4151046 - 05/08/05 09:21 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I'm no newbie and certainly no pro, but I have a question.

I'm working on my technique to perfect the mycelial growth through the casing to allow as many pins as possible.

After incubating my casings until I saw growth, I patched and placed in the fruiting chamber. There was no exposed mycelium at this time. The mycelium then continued to grow through the casing at a tremendous rate. Here is a picture after 3 days in the chamber.

This is where I would like it to stay until pinning, but it continues to grow. Is there a way to slow down the growth? Or do I just wait it out and hope no overlay??

Reading previous posts from some of the more seasoned cultivators on this forum, I would say 30 minutes is way too long to be running the cool mist. Your going to be pumping a lot of humidity into the chamber at one time.

You should be running your cool mist about every 2 hours for 5-10 minutes.

You've got a lot of vegetative growth there and if your not careful, you could have overlay. One reason for overlay is excessive moisture on the growing mycelium. The mycelium will do what it needs to for protection and that means overlay.

I am not the most seasoned cultivator around here, but I read a lot of posts from a lot of people. Take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I think I'm right on this one.

I think you have the Cool Mist confused with the Ultra Sonic humidifier. The Cool Mist mainly provides air flow and exchange.

Was just getting ready to say that. Is your casing layer a coir mix of some sort?

Thought so. Mycelium is known to really rip through coir. A cold shock in the fridge for 12 hours can help to slow down your growth.

Way to much growth. Should look more like this:

Try Peat (thats coir based I'm guessing?) based casing layer. Lower humidity more, and patch. Cold shock when you want growth to stop but a properly done casing shouldnt need a cold shock. That one wasnt cold shocked, and usually arent. Temp and fresh air all need to come with light to stop growth.

Are you using that foil to block light coming in from the sides of the casing container?

My suggestion is this: incubate after applying casing layer for like a day and a half, put into friuting chamber and patch where needed. You'll end up having even pinsets like scatmanrav there.

>Are you using that foil to block light coming in from the sides of the casing container?

If your talking to me, yes.

Ive found that while two nexted trays with tin foil between works, this works well too. The benifit of the voil there and then the casing in it, as the casing shrinks...so does the tin foil (it sticks to it after you spawn it as it colonizes). If had some of the best and most even flushes with ones that were done like the second picture there. Even nested trays got a little side pinning a day before and those ended up bigger with the sides smaller. Like all of these:

Some were harvested the day before around the sides...all in all turned out ok too. But I like this better:

Whats the advantage to the foil sticking to the substrate?

it provides a continuous barrier against light, in an effort to eliminate mushrooms trying to grow off the sides of the casing.

right?

If the casing shrinks, there is airspace all around it. This does two things. It allows light and air to get there to cause side pinning, instead of concentrating all the energy onto a nice healthy flush on top (like the one holding up a dozen eggs). The other thing it does, is allows moisture to excape from the casing..think of all that extra surface area being exposed to the air, all 4 sides.

Thats why people also use bags:

Jeez, Scatmanrav, you are really getting it down. Now you have some pictures of real good pin sets, dude! Congratulations!

The foil sticking to the sides and preventing future pinning is very brilliant! I tell you, someone should write all of these little tricks down. I've been growing for a long time, but I never heard of that one. I am definitely going to do it next time.

I understand that. But from the way scat worded it, it sounded like there was another advantage. Something about the foil sticking to the casing/substrate.

EDIT: Smart thinking!!!

So you just line your casing container with some aluminum foil or a garbage bag, right? I'll have to keep that in mind!

You need to go through that and lightly scratch. If you leave it like this, your yields will be adversely affected. Take a fork and distrupt the mycelium half way down to the substrate then put it back in the fruiting chamber. Try to bring the temperature down a few degrees if it's possible and lower the humidity to 90% if you can.

Thanks BH, I just needed some poo and peat

I gots many tricks, I've read SO much, I pick up all sorts of things...plus I'm a bit creative myself. I didnt think tinfoil would work out so good actually..I ran out of trays and couldnt do nested trays for 3 casings...so I just put the foil down then the casing. After, I relized it stuck to the side as it shrank and those casings all did better then the nested ones sitting next to them...only because some pins came up on the side a day sooner..
