Handling Shrooms - A not so cautionary tale
    #4149947 - 05/08/05 01:10 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

So I am growing again for the first time in a few years and having a blast.  I am spawning and casing and generally just experimenting with our mushroom friends.

However something funny just happened.  I was cleaning out some spawn jars that where covered in myc growth and putting their remains in my garden.  I started to feel alittle anxious and dizzy.  I was asking myself what is wrong why am I feeling this way.  I had not eating breakfast yet so maybe that was it.  After a cup of tea I still had the same feeling.

Then I realized that I felt like I had just taken a low does of shrooms.  I went and checked my pupils and they are fine but I am definitely feeling light headed and a bit twisted.  The corner of my vision is a bit "off".

The point of this post is that I think I got a bit of a does just from handling the myc.  Has anyone else had this experience?  It is kind of funny because I have heard of similar experiences of other substances being absorbed through the skin, but not shrooms.

Maybe because it was myc and not a shroom it makes it easier to pass through tissue and into the blood stream seeing that myc has a good amount of water content.

Do you guys think it is just a placebo effect I am feeling or has anyone else had a similar experience?  Either way I am not going to wear glove when I am cleaning out jars anymore  :tongue2:

Yes, but your epidermis is not that permeable. You would most likely have to be exposed to massive amounts of high concentration solution for any appreciable amount to diffuse past the relatively impermeable skin surface, especially through the hands, where the skin is extremely thick.

Your best bet for getting high would be through the GI tract or mucuous membrane, ie buccal, nasal, rectal.

Well how about the skin under your finger nails. There has been times when the finger tips of certain people have turned a blue tint from cleaning some large hauls.

I was washing dishes before all of this happened and my hands where prunny when I was dumping out the jars before I washed them. I honestly do not think it was a mild dose, because I was not looking to get dosed. It just kinda happened.

However that being said the brain is a powerful thing and may have just tricked me....which it likes to all of us on occasion.

That is a cool spore pic BTW.

One last thing is the myc was blueing from being over dehydrated in the jar (it was an older jar).

hahaha. (Now for a true story) Once i was blazed and had some serious munchies going on and I walked past a street vendor selling those italian sausages that come with a side order of serious runs. The smell was overpowering, and i was tempted to shell out 4 bucks for one, but after inhaling the aroma for about 2 minutes, all of a sudden i realized I wasn't hungry anymore.

 Once I was dripping liquid LSD on sugar cubes for a party, and I dripped a bunch on my hands. I tripped balls, but I did lick it all off my hands

I also experienced this before but not quite as intensely as you are describing. The amount of psilocybin that can be transferred through skin is negligible compared to the amount required for a threshold reaction. Even if one dipped his or her hand directly in a concentrated aquatic solution one could not likely transdermally absorb a threshold dose, so as others have pointed out, you are not actually getting high in the normal sense. However, a smell can easily invoke memories of a topic related to that smell, and a flashback is nothing more than an intense memory of some of the feelings of a prior trip. I believe the smell of the mycelium and mushrooms, which is highly distinctive, likely triggered a flashback. If you had not cultivated mushrooms before--say you had only taken them at a party sometime--you would not have experienced the flashback; rather, it is the association of the distinctive smell with having grown mushrooms and later having had a trip on them that made you have the flashback.

yeah, placebo, if you can get it from just hanging with people who trip, why not by handeling the stuff.
