experienced diagnostic help needed
    #4144651 - 05/07/05 12:18 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Thais fruiting on compost, spawned from rye, cased with peat/verm/oyster. All was going well, but recently growth has been stunted and twisted. Found a bit of green mold today, so I harvested some groups to better examine.

what is going on here?

Here's the whole casing:

Here is a close-up of a sick family:

Here is a close up of a rotted inside:

Here is a mushroom which seems to be basically OK:

So--what are the causes? The green mold? Or too much humidity? Or both? The fruits did seem heavy with water...

Should it just go in the dumpster?

Last, are the shrooms that look "OK" safe to consume?

Looks to me like your humidity is too high.

Don't know if they're safe to eat. I can't tell by the pics. You know what they say though, "when in doubt, throw it out."

agreed.
how many flushes has that casing been through?
was that "sick family" located near the edge?

this is the first flush (if you can even call it that...)

the "sick fam" was located near the side, yes.

You could be having some water accumalation along the sides of your casing. Is there any standing water on the sides or underneath your casing?? Truthfully i keep my casings at 95-99% humidity with no problems what so ever. But if you do have standing water, it can cause rot in your mushrooms.

Maybe some bacterial blotch on the second picture?? Not positive on that though.

here are some that seem to be OK--they are just slightly disfigured, and the only other abnormal thing is that they are very moist in the middle and blue quickly.

what do you think?

Bacteria for sure. Casings do best at 70 to 80 percent humidity. Don't eat that black messy one, but the others are ok as long as you boil them into tea. That will kill the live bacteria.

i agree. i wouldn't touch that black one with a big long pole. but, the others seem to be basically OK, and are drying up nicely.

i'll try to get that humidity down.

Yep, high RH. The mycelium is getting to the caps, it seems that way on some mushrooms. Also like said it looks like bacterial blotch here and there. And the Trich... *sigh* even in an RH of 0,0 it will trive... ;P
Also rot occurs when wet, and is also bacteria.

Good luck, and follow your feeling with if the mushrooms are good or not, and not your greed. But you arent desperate, good. One shouldnt be that with such powerfull spirits in the first place.....

true. i'm just more curious about the process and learning from every mistake. got another bunch of trays of mexis fruiting beautifully (i'll post those up soon), so this one will do what it will do. as an experiment, i cut about half of the casing/substrate out, found a great prolific bunch of healthy pins on one side, put it in a new tray, cleaned like crazy, and we'll see what happens.

trich will be tricky....

seems like those "clean" ones above will be just fine to munch on... they might find their way to the dumpster, anyway.

He GFRH! :P

I alo once executed a rescue operation. That was on my first bulk grow. Trich entered and I cut teh healthy parts out, leaving a "healthy"buffer to be more or less sure not to transport trich spores etc.
And it worked nicely. I got 4 or 5 flushes from it after all.

So tossing is not always recommended, as far as I am concerned.

Anyway trich is the main contam striking here. Had wetspot once, cobweb once, and bacterial blotch, also once. Trich has been striking like 10 times. From teh first cakes to exhausted bulkcasings. But it keep the strains healthy!

Like wolves keep the deerpopulation strong.. Once cakes or casings are colonised well, I have only had contams on bulkcasings after an exhausting 6 flushes, once.

And once on a casing after first flush (straw) but I pasteurised badly and I think I saw some green in the grain. But wanted to try anyway and it delivered me 100 gram dry..

BTW, the evil bitch visited my country this morning! Together with KKK Bush.

Have a nice sunday!
