salvia question
    #4137795 - 05/05/05 01:22 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I recently acquired 2 rooted salvia cuttings. One of them is about 8" and the other is probably a foot tall. Since they were slightly traumatized from shipping, they've been living in a humidity tent. I don't know the exact humidity. They have a flouro light on them.

My question is: The taller of the two has started putting out little 1/4 inch root pieces from one of the nodes. I realize this is from high humidity conditions, but I was wondering if this is bad for my plants, or if there's anything I should do to counteract this new growth. I've since taken them both out of the tent to try to acclimate them to a drier environment.

What else should I be doing? Thanks in advance.

perhaps your humidity is way too high, slowly make holes on the tent or open it as the days go by until they're acclimated...
they might lose some leaves but they do stand very dry envoirments...

agreed. Thats how it grows in the wild. shoots out roots and hopes to come in contact with the groud. I would say humidity is a bit to high as well.

Thanks for your answers, you guys. I do realize that the humidity is too high.

My question is what should I do about the root growths? Just let them go? Trim them off? What?

Alright. I'm going to slowly introduce them to a lower humidity condition, and then just leave them be.

Thanks for the advice!

I got a plant recently, that looked a little rough after shipping. Just put it on the porch, where it gets mostly indirect, but some direct, sun. Mist it the morning and afternoon, and it's growing like crazy. Don't pamper it so much!

I live in an apartment building... no porch for me.

My plants are strictly indoors.

I have salivas in my apartment as well. I used to run a room humidifier with them 247, but they do with with normal california humidity. I hear they adapt to most conditions though. They absolutely love a spray from ultrasonic humidifier a couple times a day. They like water too, but not as much as they love the humidity. I use a almost 50% mix of coca coir and then regular potting soil. I sometimes add some fertilizer, but that is very very rare.
