Bizarre pins

C. Comatus pins taking some strange turns here. Thick, heavy brown residual scaling along with what seems to be very early cap formation sans a veil.

Any thoughts?

my thoughts today have been about the amount of clothing i need to bring on my backpacking trip tomorrow. There is about 15-20 feet of snow on the ground here.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

This grow is around 2 months now. The substrate depth is really shallow (2 inches) which is probably a big factor here. It was mostly a test to see if I could get them to pin. Now that I can pin these puppies, the next run will be 4-6 inches of composted straw/manure.
