Psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, they all bind to your serotonin receptors. They have similar structures in certain places that all fit into the same spot on serotonin. I think.

In a very small nut shell, both LSD and psilocybin/psilocin are trypamines. They bind readily to the seretonin receptors in your small intestines and brain. They don't affect any chemicals in your nervous system but rather inhbit seretonin trasfer for a brief period of time. In essence, the trypamine temporarly acts more or less as the seretonin.

All psychedelic tryptamines (LSD, psilosybin, DMT) and phenethylamines (mescaline, 2c*) all bind to serotonin receptors (5-HT). There are many different types of serotonin receptors (5-HT2, 5-HT2A, etc), and each drug's relative affinity for the different types of receptors produces the variations in experience between the different drugs. i.e. LSD feels subjectively different from mushrooms because of the slight difference in receptors they bind too, although they are all subtypes of serotonin.
