Outdoor Casing Layer?

I just started a couple outdoor beds with cow poop and colonized WBS spawn. I cased them with about 1 inch of potting soil, and im going to put a thin layer of wet straw over them tomorrow to keep humidity up. Does this sound ok for an outdoor casing layer? My substrate depth is about 6-8 inches.

For the casing layer, throw a thin layer of soil on top of the substrate. On top of this throw a small amount of leaves as a moisture buffer.

that's what i have right now, but diver said leaves wouldn't hold humidity very well, that's why i asked about the straw. Have you had success with the leaves?

How's about mixing up some vermiculite into some soil.. vermiculite holds tons of water!!
I've never done an outdoor bed.. i dunno if this will work.

jtk, It all depends on your climate....do you live somewhere really arid that gets little water? When I grew cubes outdoors here in South where its hot and humid as shit I just put a thin layer of soil over horse shit. I suggest you put a layer of soil and throw a bunch of grass seed of some sort ontop. The grass creates a microclimate that cubes love and also some shade from the blazing sun.

I went back today and mixed in some grass seed w/ the potting soil. Then i added a very thin layer of potting soil on that. Then sprinkled some more grass seed, and covered with a thin .5-1 inch layer of very wet straw. Hopefully that will keep the humidity up.
I hoping to see some fruits in about 2 weeks.
The mushrooms will still be able to grow through a .5-1 inch layer of potting soil and a .5-1inch layer of straw won't they?

I think it will take a lil longer than 2 weeks prolly if the substrate still has to colonize and such. I also have an outdoor bed going and it has taken about 3-4 weeks and it is just now all colonized, although we did have about a week of below norm temps in the 60's so that could have slowed it down. I am hoping to see fruits mid to late may. I basically did the same thing as you but i also mixed straw in with the poo and then put a layer of straw on top also for holding in moisture. Good luck.

so you expecting fruits after about 4-6 weeks?
I live in Southern IL, and the temps here are 70-80 plus during the day now, and about 50-65 at night.

JTK... I just moved from Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay northern IL. Not a bad place if you ask me. If you ever get a chance.. come out to the West Coast to visit some of us!
To keep it on topic.. Good luck w/ the outdoor bed!
