Let's talk about the Beatles
    #4141727 - 05/06/05 12:19 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I'm very new to the Beatles...I have the Yellow Submarine CD and listen to it all the time.  I especially like 'All the Lonely People' and 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.'

I don't know...there's just something about those guys that make me feel a little warm inside.

Can anyone recommend anything else for me from the Beatles?

You have to have to listen to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. That album has LSD all over it.

And while you're at it grab Pink Floyd's Saucerful of Secrets.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

New to the Beatles? You been on Mars all your life?

I'm only teasing. They're as good as the hype and you're right they are a warm band. They hardly wrote a single negative song. If I were you I'd try to get into the albums in chronological order because the Beatles had a really fascinating and steady evolution of their sound. To me the Beatles catalogue is like a beautiful diary of the 1960s. I don't really know the early albums too well, besides the famous songs. I would start with Hard Days Night or Rubber Soul maybe.

Get Abbey Road and listen to it start to finish!

Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's are also amazing.

If Mars = Conservative-christian-household, then yes.

I didn't even know what or who a Pink Floyd was until I turned 18.  The guy behind me in my English class was wearing a Pink Floyd t-shirt.  I saw it, and thought, "haha, what a funny name...,' and I asked the guy with the shirt, "What's a Pink Floyd?"

He looked at me like I was absolutely crazy.  "You don't know who Pink Floyd is?"

I feel puzzled, totally left out of some well-known social secret.  "Nope.  Who?"

He shakes his head, almost aghast at my ignorance.  "Nevermind.  Just...nevermind."

......
...
..

So you see, I am very behind on things.

Well there's an upside to that, which is that you have the joy of discovering these great bands for the first time still ahead of you.

the beatles are the band that everyone else aspires to be. Quite frankley, they are the shit.

I usually like to say "should" instead of "need", but in this case need is more fitting, You need to listen to these albums, preferably in this order, as soon as possible, multiple times, really, play them over and over until you are sick of them and can sing every last song yourself, then start again and play them some more.

Help!
Rubber Soul
Revolver
Sgt. Peppers lonley hearts club band
The magical mystery tour
White album
Let it be
Abbey Road
George Harisons "All things must pass" album belongs on this list as well.

Enjoy!

Dont sell the pre-psychedelic Beatles short!

Hard days night, Please Please Me, Beatles for Sale (Mistaaaaaaaaa Mooooonlight.....  )

I happen to own every beatles CD, legit, including all the anthologies, and bbc session.  Oh yea and "early tapes" with sheridan.  I seen Paul McCartney in concert, the coolest rock concert ever (tied with eric clapton).  He is touring again, i hope i can afford to go.

Also, post beatles is good.  I dont really like John's stuff, but Paul and George have awsome post-beatles songs

Flew in from Miami Beach BOAC
Didn't get to bed last night
Oh, the way the paper bag was on my knee
Man, I had a dreadful flight
I'm back in the USSR
You don't know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the USSR, yeah

Been away so long I hardly knew the place
Gee, it's good to be back home
Leave it till tomorrow to unpack my case
Honey disconnect the phone
I'm back in the USSR
You don't know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the US
Back in the US
Back in the USSR

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the west behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
They Georgia's always on my my my my my my my my my mind
Oh, come on
Hu Hey Hu, hey, ah, yeah
yeah, yeah, yeah
I'm back in the USSR
You don't know how lucky you are, boys
Back in the USSR

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the west behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
They Georgia's always on my my my my my my my my my mind

Oh, show me round your snow peaked
mountain way down south
Take me to you daddy's farm
Let me hear you balalaika's ringing out
Come and keep your comrade warm
I'm back in the USSR
Hey, You don't know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the USSR
