One flew over the cuckoo's nest LSD HIJACK
    #4140588 - 05/06/05 03:31 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

This was my final book in my final year of HS in English. My teacher (who is a fairly young one, very cool in fact. think of a smart, good-hearted, grown up preppy girl) started giving us a preword on it before we started reading it.

She talked about how school institutions resemble mental ones in the way they are constructed, and was trying to relay that the scichzophrenic mind can be understantood by analogizing it to something we encounter with us on a daily basis. So as soon as she was finished I said something in the matter of

"Well, you know, Ken Kesey, the writer, just in the way that you were describing, to understand the abnormal mind he ingested pretty big doses of ... "

She interrupted me right there and then.

"Stop, stop, you'll ruin it for the rest of the class!"

I just laughed and thought I'd save the best for last.

So about a week ago we finished reading the book, and the assignment on  it was to bring a significant piece that would accord to it.

So I brought in a clip on Kesey on the BBC LSD documentary. Before I played it, I said I dont want to disrupt her teaching career, but just want to shine some light that some people associate Kesey's drug use with schizophrenia described in his novels. I said that sometimes one needs to bring something more acute and extreme to point out the wrongs in the educational system.

FUCK DID SHE FLIP OUT when she saw Kesey say "I would not have been able to write this book without LSD", or his "Acid Tests". She told me to turn it off and sit down right away.

I didnt and said that I was just trying to educate just like she was, about Kesey's experiences to understand the subject. She ran up to turn the video off, with the psychedelic Furthur rolling in the background

Very cool man. I love Ken Kesey, and Tom Wolfe's, "The Electric Koolaid Acid Test"

Not sure what your teacher thinks she's protecting you from

She's trying to shield y'all about them nasty ol' drugs. Not that she has a chance in hell of actually doing that since the truth is out. Ah well, what do you expect from HS? I found most of my HS experience merely indoctrination, plain old bullshit and make-work. Only when I was accepted into the advanced classes did I actually learn something....

By the way, both the movie and the book were great reads!

Wow it's sad that a teacher can't be a little more open minded.  Props for not turning the TV off when she told you to.  It sounds like you handled the situation very well and maybe educated the class a little.

Yeah I told my english class that. I couldn't show them the video clip, but I quoted him during my speech.

But this is college and my teacher was WAAAAAY cool about it. I even asked the class if they had any experience with LSD.

Your teacher gets the big .  I love bringing up drugs in class...I consider it this personal mission of mine, to violate the taboo of drugs being discussed in situtations where they're usually not.  Good for you man, keep it up.  I wrote half or more than half of my more open-topic papers in college on my personal drug experiences.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.
