Martha Setup - Cool mist too high RH
    #4140437 - 05/06/05 02:27 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Problem: vicks cool mist model v400 running 24/7 in martha stewart is producing too high RH levels for casings. The readings are at a constant 95% and I find my best electronic humidity gauge to be pretty accurate (salt test worked). Ok, so I was thinking that maybe the culprit would be the 1" D tubing, approx. 4 ft long. Smaller diameter tubing might solve this problem by restricting air flow and thus would restrict humidity, what do you think? I would like to hear some other peoples opinions before I decide to go out and buy some more tubing and glue, lol. Also I would like to hear if anyone else has had this problem, or any suggestions on how to remedy it.
Thanks.

I would time the coolmist, or tinker with tubing length first. It might take some trial and error, but by bending a garden hose or putting more elbows in your tube set up it will cause some of the water to condense on the pipe, and will lower the RH while providing all the air supply. There's no way to really predict how many more elbows or how much longer it would need to be though, just have to fuck with it...

Restrict the air intake on the coolmist with some sort of a pre/filter filter pad.

That will slow it down & is simple to do (filter pad & tape)& filters the air exchange BETTER.

Simple as that & should solve the problem.

Supplemental air flow.

Add a computer fan for extra air exchange. If you want to know how to set this up, let me know.

How do you rig a computer fan to run on regular batteries or power cord? Where do you mount it? If on the inside of the greenhouse, do you have to worry about moisture on it? If on top, dont you have to worry about contams getting into your casings?

I put some cakes in there, no casings yet. The cakes are doing really well. I guess I shall have to fuck with it some. Thanks for the good ideas everyone.

I think a timer would work (don't take my word for it),
if you wanted to do a computer fan, you could put a filter disk behind it (so it draws from the filter disk), and then arrange a battery, running a wire from each of the two female ports on the fan plug to, say, a 12V battery +/-. It would probably work, since those fans run on DC power. Granted, I've never tried this, and 12V might not satisfy the full power demands of those fans (it would run, just not as quickly if the power was too low), I don't know exactly the power draws of the fans (60, 80, 90, 120mm shouldnt matter on power draw) but I'm sure you could look it up.

Pras

edit: If you're die-hard on this, I used to run a laptop that would overheat after 5 minutes of use, so I propped it up on an old PSU i ripped out of my old system, and 2 80mm fans tied together, the PSU powered the fans, which cooled the CPU from the laptop. Ghetto fabulous, baby.
