Bulk experiment
    #4133457 - 05/04/05 03:44 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

I was gonna try an experiment with bulk but run it by yall first. My plan is to get a few colinized popcorn cakes and spawn them to a mix of 80% cow manure, 10% kelp meal, 10% verm. Will it work, and if so how good. I've also heard kelp meal adds potency, is this true?

i'm pretty sure it'll work, why not? you might think about adding straw, it "fluffs up" the substrate so that myc can travel faster through it. you'll have to see what agar says about kelp meal, i think i've heard him mention it.

I don't think 10% verm would be enough to fluff up cow poo to the right texture, but I could be wrong. That stuff is pretty thick. Agar has experimented with kelp meal and reported improved potency, so yes.

i hate to drop anvils across the board, but man-
this bagged crap is exactly that.
every time you use it, it is an expiriment; because you never know exactly what is in it.
why not go with something that is proven to work consistently, and with great results?
9 out of 10 mycologists reccomend the H.
got trouble finding a source of h poo?
Tennessee Stud Substrates is the way to go.
it is similar to the bagged manure in the sense that you will get what you pay for.

Seaweed is extremely high in natural tryptophans, thus the reported increases in potency. I live on the coast, so go out and pick up seaweed off the beach. After drying, I mix it in with my bulk substrates at about ten to twenty percent. The myc colonizes it almost as well and fast as straw.

Bagged cow manure is a poor performer by itself, but mixed with compost, coir, verm, worm castings, seaweed, etc., it's ok.

You can buy seaweed in your local chinatown, asian market or health food market. You can get it just about any form: whole, sheets, flakes, etc... It's sold as a food and additive. It's probably sitting next the bag of Eden brand of Agar.

I figgured that would be the case bro.

Then I can lay it out on my blue tarps in the patio to dry out...like the horse poo.

Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre

A Brief Progress Report from the Mushroom Research Group for the year 2004.

The research was conducted in the Department of Biology at UNAM in Windhoek.

The objectives were twofold:

1. Determination of the optimum ratio of seaweed in other substrates that can support maximum production of oyster mushrooms.

2. Determination of concentrations of iodine in seaweed combined with other substrates at various ratios as well as the ability of oyster mushrooms to absorb iodine from these substrate mixtures.

In the first objective, two species of seaweed, Laminaria schinzii and Eklonia maxima were investigated. Laminaria schinzii was mixed with grass at the ratios ranging from 0%-100%.

Results:

Mushrooms failed to fruit in substrates containing more than 20% seaweed.

Substrates containing only grass (no seaweed) and 20% seaweed supported mushroom growth and fruiting. Interestingly, the substrate containing 20% seaweed produced more mushrooms than that containing no seaweed (100% grass). The second experiment investigated substrates (grass and maize cobs) containing the seaweed Eklonia maxima at various ratios (0%-60%).

Mushrooms failed to grow in substrates containing more than 30% seaweed.

The substrates containing no seaweed and those containing 10% and 30% seaweed supported production of mushrooms. In this experiment, it was also observed that the substrate containing seaweed (10%) produced more mushrooms (double) than that without seaweed.

Inspecting growth of mushroom mycelium in a substrate containing seaweed

Discussion:

Failure of mushrooms to grow and fruit in substrates containing high ratios of seaweed may be due to high salinity since seaweeds are known to contains high salt concentrations. The enhancement of mushroom production by seaweed might be due to presence of certain nutrients in seaweeds.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the second objective, the seaweed was mixed at various ratios with grass (0%-30%) and iodine concentrations determined both in the substrates and in the mushrooms that grew on them.

Results:

Iodine was found to be present and its concentration increased with increasing amounts of seaweed in the substrate mixtures. Mushrooms were observed to absorb iodine from the substrates. Its concentration in the mushroom tissues increased with increasing ratios of seaweed in the substrate mixtures.

Discussion:

Eating mushrooms grown on seaweed-containing substrates may supplement iodine in diet.
