Germing b. caapi
    #4137594 - 05/05/05 02:33 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I got a bunch of seeds in the mail a couple of days ago including some banisteriopsis caapi seeds, I noticed they arent your average seeds the look more like petals. Theyre the things that fall off the trees and spin all the way down like helicopters. I dont have much of these things so I dont wanna fuck them up, how would I go about germinating them, is it the same thing as any seeds, just soak them overnight or should I just put them in the ground or what?

Just put them in soil. If they are good they will sprout in a few weeks or so. I usually tear off the wing and leave the stub sticking up.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

Yea fresh B. Caapi seed germinate easily. Some can take much longer than others. I had one batch that germinated in a week or so the next batch I had took something like 2 months.

I germinate them in gladware filed halfway with soil, mist and put the top on to build humidity, a little extra warmth doesnt hurt either. If they take a while to germinate andmold starts growing on them, treat with peroxide.

Hope this helps a bit.

I started germinating them in a gladware with soil like you said and I put them in one of them seedline boxes that you plug in for heat too. How long does it take for it to grow about 5 foot tall, have you still got any caapi's growing?

Once Caapi are well established they grow like wildfire. I have heard that large ones in optimal conditions can put out as much as half a foot per week. Now I`m not sure about all that but they do grow fast after they get a half dozen true leaves or so. I`m not sure this ansers your question but its all I can offer.

Stoney, I see you at just about every ethno related forum on the net, I assume you have been at this for quite sometime. If you get a chance I would love to see pictures of your garden sometime, I have a decent collection but I`m sure yours would put mine to shame .

Flux I`m not sure I understand what your trying to say here, but I agree (I think ). HBWR is a very slow growing plant I hear that once they get a certain amount of true leaves they take off but I have not found this to be true. MG on the other hand....
