The harmful effects of H2O2/H2O misting
    #4136620 - 05/05/05 09:20 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Some mist their casings with a water / peroxide mixture to help combat / prevent contams from overtaking their grows. Is there a downside to spraying peroxide on your casings during the pin initiating stage, just as or before the myc colonizes casing layers and reaches the surface?

People use peroxide and water all the time to try to combat cobweb. If this is done after making a casing but before pinning, and the cobweb is successfully eliminated, what would be the adverse effects? Hindered pinsets? Delayed pinning? Mycelium degeneration or deterioration?

My personal opinion is that H202 spraying is totally ineffective. I haven't used it since I roasted a casing with a light mix (5-10%) of H202 in a spray bottle awhile back.

Good air exchange is the only tool you need to battle cobweb, trust me. Keep the fresh air a flowin', and it won't take hold. I had a few issues with cobweb awhile back, then I simply upped my air exchange and it solved everything practically overnight.

Great. I have made six 3q casings (1ft x 1ft) just a few days ago and initiated pinning yesterday only to see  :crazy:cobweb:crazy: I never had a problem with my other casings until now! I misted with some h2o2/water since that was all the advice i could find on the forum. I will start fanning them heavily for a day or two to see if it helps as well.

Just curious what any side effects of h2o2 spraying might be on the mycelium

Your cobweb took hold in the incubation stage by the sounds of it, how long were they in there?

Couldn't tell you the effects of H202 on mycelium, I just know I don't want it near my mycelium anymore

Straight 3% peroxide out of the bottle will melt cobweb on contact. Air exchange is cruicial during the fruiting cycle, but it's also a good idea to cover your casings with foil for a few days after applying the casing layer. The foil helps to hold in moisture and CO2, which is suddenly lowered when you remove the foil, which along with the light exposure will help to begin pinning.
