Am I screwed?
    #413639 - 10/04/01 12:07 PM (23 years, 5 months ago)

OK, so it's my first time using Finch Seed. I made my jars up real nice, did the inoculation and put them into hiding. I know that the temperature should be around 85F for optimal mycelium growth, however I hit a snag. It seems I set the heating pad far hotter than it needed to be. Thus, today I went to check the progress and smelled something absolutely awful (like the worst smell ever, really!). Looking at the jars I realized that they were far too hot. I can only estimate the temperature since I don't have a thermometer on the heating pad; it must have been 90F or more. Most of the water that I boiled into my Finch Seed is now at the bottom of the jars. This whole process has only been 2 days in the making. The chamber has only been hot for one. The mycelium have not become visible yet. It's a B+ from the Hawkseye. I was hoping it would be a good one to start with. Now I'm thinking I'm screwed and I will have to buy more?

"the worst smell ever"

Hmmmmmm, sounds like the end...

There's an old joke....

A guy walks into his doctors office and tells the doctor that no matter what he eats when he's on his boat, he pukes it right back up... The doctor prescribes some sea sickness pills...

A week later, the guy is back. And he tells the doctor that
the pills did no good, and he needs something that works!

The doctor says " what you need to do is, find some nice ripe tomatoes and eat them before you sail..."

The guy says " Will that help me stop puking?"

Doctor says " nah, but it'll look really pretty in the water! :0) "

"Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music."

Ya, I emailed them about that and he was real cool. That's an awesome program =). They have been really great to work with. Nice that you can actually trust someone in this shady world.

I highly recommend against using a heating pad, even if you're really careful. My pet ape (who starred in Ape's A Popping, homer simpson's favorite ape movie) used a heating pad with several layers of magazines between it and the jars, keeping the temp just at 79 degrees for about three weeks.

The cakes were a little blue on top when they were birthed, and produced very little fruit. When they were cut up (to boil in water and trip off of) the insides were very blue and dry.

The extra 5-7 days it takes for them to colonize while at room temperature is worth it when you risk losing them all to heat.

:)

Well, my room temp is only about 70F. I put two pieces of packing foam (big sheets not peanuts) between the pad and the bin. I am going to test the temp this afternoon to see if that has worked for me.

IMO.. forget the heating pad..I know alot of people use them but..
as you have found out they are hard to control + a fire hazard. For jars
I use a t rex reptile mats with a rheostat, underneath a plastic sterilite bin, thermometer,
jars with micron magick disks, and a small loaf pan with perlite/H20/H202 for humidification.
There are different sizes of reptile mats found at www.thatpetplace.com
Rheostat.. regular lamp dimmer.. home depot 8 bucks or less as I recall.
85 degrees.. then you won't cook your jars again. For
disks http://www.micronmagick.com/

Wow! I like that "fuck up the first time" that they will replace the sryinge policy!! I know a guy that had a syringe replaced from a popular (well kinda popular) vendor that did replace the syringe- however they said that it was only for use with the PDA tech (a mycelrium only mold fungus resitance tech- ya cant grow 'shrooms this way)!! I mean, some vendors just try to change the rules in the middle of the "game".
